Kvam scores in overtime to give Tusculum 2-1 win at Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Andreas Kvam scored midway through the first overtime period to give Tusculum College a 2-1 victory at Lees-McRae College in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday night.

Andre De Giorgi scored his third goal in two games for the Pioneers (2-0-0), who outshot the Bobcats (0-3-0) by a 17-11 margin, including 13-7 in the second half and overtime. Pol Vassart scored in the 51st minute for Lees-McRae, which trailed 1-0 at halftime after De Giorgi's goal but did not have a shot attempt in the overtime period.

Kvam's game-winner came with 5:06 elapsed in overtime as he took a pass from Rocco Menna and one-timed a shot past Lees-McRae keeper Tyler Pavlet. The Pioneers were playing in overtime for the fifth time in their last eight matches dating back to last season, with wins in three of those five contests.

Tusculum opened the scoring at 21:47 as De Giorgi collected a rebound off a failed clear and beat Pavlet to the right side for his third goal of the year. The Pioneers would not have another shot attempt for the remainder of the half, but led 1-0 at the break as both teams had four shots in the opening 45 minutes.

The Pioneers nearly took a 2-0 lead about 2 1/2 minutes into the second half, but a shot by Dallas Dunn went off the crossbar. Just over three minutes later, the Bobcats tied the score as James Morgan fed Thomas Deeley, whose back heel pass to Vassart was fired past Pioneer keeper Jorge Alvarez at 50:36 for a 1-1 score.

Both keepers were called upon to make saves in the final 20 minutes, as Pavlet stopped Kvam in the 72nd minute and Alvarez denied Deeley in the 76th minute. Tusculum's Fabian Proesch had two chances in the final five minutes, but Pavlet made a save on one shot and he shot high off a corner kick on the other attempt with four minutes remaining.

Kvam had the only shot attempts in the overtime period for either team, with his second resulting in the second overtime goal of his career and his fifth game-winner among his 14 career goals.

Alvarez finished the evening with four saves for the Pioneers, while Pavlet had five stops for the Bobcats. Both teams were whistled for 15 fouls, while Lees-McRae had a slight 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.

The Pioneers will return to action Saturday night at Lee, with match time against the Flames scheduled for 7 p.m.
