Stephen Scrivens scored on a header with 17:07 remaining in the
second half to give Coker College a 1-0 victory over Tusculum
College in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match at
Pioneer Field Sunday afternoon.
The Cobras (7-5-2, 5-4-1 SAC) outshot the Pioneers (5-9-0, 2-7-0
SAC) by a 13-3 margin, but could not capitalize until Scrivens
headed home a service from Noah Gulley in the 73rd minute.
Coker finished the first half with an 8-0 advantage in shots but
managed to put just two on goal as the teams went to the locker
room tied 0-0. The Pioneers took their first shot of the match in
the 48th minute off the foot of Tyler Linkous, but Cobras keeper
Kyndle Cobb made the save.
After the goal by Scrivens, Tusculum applied pressure in the
closing minutes and nearly got the equalizer with just over a
minute to go, but a deflection attempt by Andres Vargas was handled
by Cobb.
Tusculum finished the match with a 6-3 edge in corner kicks, while
the Pioneers had a 6-5 lead in fouls in a cleanly-played contest on
both sides. Coker was called three times for offsides, once
negating a goal, and Tusculum was flagged once.
Cobb made two saves in goal for the Cobras, and Pioneer keeper
Ashley Elsey finished with three stops in the contest.
The Pioneers wrap up their home schedule on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
against local rival Carson-Newman at Pioneer Field.
