Roberto Pimentel scored on a free kick with 1:13 left in the
second half to give Tusculum College a 1-0 victory over Barton
College in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday night.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Pioneers
(4-7-0), who were outshot 21-15 by the Bulldogs (5-6-1) in the
match. Barton had three shots go off the post in the match,
including one by Jovan Gracia just four minutes before Pimentel
netted his game-winner.
Both teams came out aggressive on offense, with a steady output of
shots at both ends in the opening half. Gracia had the best chance
in that span when his header hit the post in the 17th minute, but
stayed outside the goal. The Bulldogs finished the half with a 10-8
edge in shots, but the Pioneers put three on goal to just two from
Barton in the half.
Barton nearly took the lead in the 65th minute, but a shot from the
box by Kevin Strassburger caromed off the post. The Bulldogs
continued to apply pressure against the Pioneers, including another
header from Gracia that went off the post with 5:14 left in the
second half.
Finally, it was the Pioneers' Pimentel that delivered as he netted
his fourth goal of the season on a restart with 1:13 on the clock,
and Tusculum ran out the clock for just their second one-goal
victory in eight such matches this season.
Pimentel led the Pioneers with five shots in the match, while Erik
Pajunk and Archer Bane each had five shot attempts for the
Bulldogs. Barton took seven corner kicks in the match to two by
Tusculum, and were flagged for offsides seven times while the
Pioneers were caught five times.
Tusculum keeper Victor Ohlin finished with four saves for his first
shutout of the season, while Vasily Yakimkin made five stops for
Barton.
The Pioneers will be on the road Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne for a
South Atlantic Conference match starting at 7:30 p.m.
