Top-seeded Mars Hill College scored a pair of first-half goals
to defeat Tusculum College 2-0 in the quarterfinals of the Food
Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Wednesday
night.
The 12th-ranked Lions (14-2-2) will face Anderson in semifinal
action Friday evening in Rock Hill, S.C., while the eighth-seeded
Pioneers' season comes to an end with a 7-8-3 record.
Alex Mullen and Stephen Bivens scored just under 13 minutes apart
in the first half and goalkeeper Zac Scott made four saves to help
the Lions to the victory over the Pioneers.
Mullen opened the scoring at 16:59 with his ninth goal of the
season following a through ball from Bivens. Bivens followed at
29:54 with his 10th goal of the year when he headed home a long
pass from Gregg Munn to give Mars Hill a 2-0 advantage.
Tusculum outshot Mars Hill 8-2 in the second half in an effort to
cut into the deficit, with the best chance coming in the 68th
minute when Phiip Wistrom hit the crossbar with a shot.
Overall, the Pioneers had a 10-6 edge in shots over the Lions and a
5-2 advantage in corner kicks. Mars Hill was flagged three times
for offsides to one by Tusculum.
Victor Ohlin made his third straight start in goal for the Pioneers
and made one save in the defeat.
