Tusculum College and Wingate University played to a 0-0 tie in a
South Atlantic Conference men's soccer match Saturday evening.
The Pioneers (7-7-3, 3-4-2 SAC) were outshot 17-6 by the Bulldogs
(10-4-1, 5-3-1 SAC) but received seven saves from Victor Ohlin to
earn the draw.
Despite the tie, Tusculum will be the eighth seed in next week's
Food Lion SAC Tournament and will play a quarterfinal match Tuesday
at Mars Hill. Wingate is the fourth seed and will host fifth seed
Anderson in Tuesday's quarterfinals.
The teams played a scoreless first half, with Wingate holding a 6-4
advantage in shots over Tusculum. The stalemate continued through
the second half, though the Bulldogs outshot the Pioneers by a
margin of 7-1.
In the first overtime period, Wingate took three of the four shots,
but Ohlin came through with a pair of saves to preserve the
deadlock. The Bulldogs took the only shot of the second overtime
period, but a header by Victor Tozelli went wide of the target.
The match was a rough contest, with the teams combining for 41
fouls and six yellow cards. Wingate was flagged 12 times for
offsides to three by Tusculum, and the Pioneers held an 8-6 edge in
corner kicks.
Wingate keeper Daniel DeGraff recorded four saves in goal for the
Bulldogs to earn the shutout.
