Lenoir-Rhyne University broke a scoreless tie in the 64th minute
and went on to defeat Tusculum College 3-1 in South Atlantic
Conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Pioneer
Field.
Caolan Cullen scored the go-ahead goal with 26:50 left for the
Bears (6-5-4, 3-3-2 SAC), and Chris Johnson and Tobias Tobrant
added insurance goals in the final 22 minutes.
Andre Bissmark scored on a penalty kick with 6:37 left to account
for the lone goal for the Pioneers (6-7-2, 3-4-1 SAC), who were
outshot 14-8 by the Bears in the match.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears broke through in the 64th
minute when Cullen knocked home a corner kick by Chris Johnson for
his second goal of the season.
Exactly 5 1/2 minutes later, the Bears caught a break when Pioneer
defender Matias Rubio handled a shot from Johnson on the goal line,
resulting in an immediate red card and a penalty kick. Johnson
fired home the goal, his fourth of the year, and gave L-R a 2-0
lead with 21:20 remaining.
The Pioneers received a penalty kick of their own with 6:37 left
when the Bears were called for a foul in the box. Bissmark stepped
up and buried his fourth goal of the season to pull Tusculum within
2-1.
Tusculum was unable to threaten with the tying goal in the closing
minutes, and Lenoir-Rhyne tallied the clincher with 34 seconds left
when Tobrant took a pass from Nicholas Sibert on a break and scored
his eighth of the year.
Despite being outshot 14-8 by the Bears, the Pioneers held a 10-4
edge in corner kicks. Lenoir-Rhyne was called for offsides four
times and Tusculum was flagged twice.
Andy Goellner finished with four saves in goal for the Pioneers,
while Stefan Dill made six stops for the Bears.
The Pioneers will close out their regular season with two road
matches, beginning Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Milligan.
