Junior Montano scored with 5.3 seconds left in the first
overtime period to lift Brevard College to a 1-0 victory over
Tusculum College in the South Atlantic Conference men's soccer
opener for both teams Tuesday night at Pioneer Field.
Montano headed home his third goal of the season following a long
free kick from Jami Uuttu to give the Tornados (1-3-1, 1-0-0 SAC)
the victory over the Pioneers (3-2-0, 0-1-0 SAC).
Neither team had many scoring chances during the contest, as
Tusculum put just five of its 13 shots on goal and Brevard found
the target on just two of its nine attempts.
The best scoring chance came from the Tornados' Landon Reid in the
68th minute, when he fired a shot wide of the goal from 20 yards in
a one-on-one situation with Pioneer keeper Andy Goellner.
Goellner finished the match with one save, which came against
Montano in the final minute of regulation. Brevard keeper Pauli
Jussila tallied five saves in the shutout victory.
The Pioneers will be back in action Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a
non-conference match against Barton at Pioneer Field.
