A three-goal first half lifted the Tusculum College men's soccer
team to a 4-1 victory over Shorter University in action at the
Stanno Tournament Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
Simon Corell, Roberto Pimentel and Pablo Laguna scored in the first
half for the Pioneers (3-1-0), who added a late goal from Cody
Kammerzell. The Hawks (1-2-1) tallied in the 62nd minute on a goal
by Irvin Espinal.
The Pioneers dominated play in the first half, taking the lead for
good at 10:18 when Corell gathered a cross through the defense by
Andre Bissmark and scored to the far post for a 1-0 lead.
Pimentel doubled the Tusculum lead to 2-0 at 18:34 as he received a
short pass from Kammerzell and rifled home his first goal of the
season. Laguna tacked on the Pioneers' third goal at 40:37 when he
took a feed from Brandon Burney and blasted home his first goal of
the year.
Shorter controlled the action for the early portion of the second
half, but could not convert on several excellent chances. Their
best scoring opportunity came on a header from five yards out by
Robert Ochieng that Pioneer keeper Andy Goellner was able to
smother on the line.
The Hawks finally cashed in at 61:30 on a quick strike by Espinal
off a pass from Ryan Mcgouirk, and the Pioneers closed out the
scoring with 1:19 left on the clock as Kammerzell scored his second
of the season on a pass from close range by Dario Greiser.
The Pioneers finished the match with a 14-8 advantage in shots over
the Hawks, while Shorter had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Both teams
were called for 11 fouls, and Tusculum was whistled for offsides
six times to two by Shorter.
Goellner finished with three saves in goal for the Pioneers, while
Ryan Edwards made two stops for the Hawks in the first half before
giving way to Austen Trevers, who saw five shots in the final 45
minutes.
Pimentel and Bissmark were named to the All-Tournament team, along
with Ochieng and Augusto Barreto of Shorter. Also named to the
All-Tournament team were Sindre Wello and Rurik Pereira of
Carson-Newman along with James Abraham and James Smith of
Lees-McRae.
