Barry University scored in each half as the 12th-ranked
Buccaneers defeated Tusculum College 2-0 in non-conference men's
soccer action Saturday night at Pioneer Field.
Kendall Sealy scored in the 33rd minute and assisted on a goal from
Connor Randel in the 50th minute for the Buccaneers (1-1-0), who
limited the Pioneers (1-1-0) to just one shot on goal and five
total shots in the match.
"We found it difficult to get energy. I felt like we were a little
tired, and we just never really found ourselves," said Pioneer head
coach Allen Vital. "Give Barry lots of credit. They pressured us
and controlled the game. Our passes were all over the place. I
think we're much better than this. We just have to regroup, get
some rest and get ready for next weekend."
Barry had the best scoring chance early, but Thomas Coombes shot
high from 20 yards in a one-on-one situation with Pioneer keeper
Andy Goellner. The Buccaneers continued to carry the play and
finally scored when a shot from Sealy from up top was slowed on a
deflection and rolled all the way into the net for a 1-0 lead at
32:05.
The Buccaneers needed less than five minutes of the second half to
build their lead to 2-0. Sealy spotted Randel cutting toward the
goal, and Randel scored his second goal of the young season from
close range at 49:48 for a 2-0 Barry lead.
Tusculum was unable to build much of an attack against a tight
Barry defense despite earning six corner kicks in the match. The
only shot on goal came off the head of Cody Kammerzell in the 43rd
minute, but Barry keeper Fred Perez was equal.
Barry was called for 11 fouls in the match to six by Tusculum, and
the Bucs were flagged five times for offsides. Both keepers
finished with one save in the contest.
The Pioneers will train for their next match against Lees-McRae on
Friday at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Park as part of the Stanno Tournament.
Carson-Newman and Shorter will also be participating in the
weekend's games.
