Fredrik Muren scored goals in each half to lead Tusculum College
to a 2-0 victory at Limestone College in men's soccer action
Thursday afternoon at Saints Field.
Muren scored in the 12th and 57th minutes for the Pioneers (1-0-0),
who were tabbed as the favorites in the South Atlantic Conference
preseason coaches poll. Andy Goellner made four saves in goal for
Tusculum in the shutout.
The Pioneers took a 1-0 lead when Muren headed home a corner kick
by Dario Greiser for his first career goal at 11:40. Tusculum
carried that 1-0 advantage into halftime despite a 7-5 shot
advantage by Limestone in the opening half.
Limestone nearly tied the game in the 51st minute when a shot by
Thomas McCready caromed off the crossbar. Muren provided the
Pioneers with breathing room in the 57th minute, converting a
deflection in the box into his second goal of the game at 56:33 for
a 2-0 Tusculum lead.
The Saints finished the game with a 15-11 advantage in total shots,
but the Pioneers prevailed in shots on goal by a margin of 5-4.
Tusculum took five corner kicks to two from Limestone, while the
Saints were whistled for 15 fouls compared to 12 by the
Pioneers.
Tom Godfrey made three saves in goal for the Saints, while McCready
led the Limestone attack with four shots. Andre Bissmark paced the
Pioneers with three shots, including two on goal.
Tusculum will play its 2012 home opener Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
at Pioneer Park against 12th-ranked Barry University.
