GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College and Catawba College played to a scoreless tie in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
With the draw, the Pioneers (6-7-2, 5-1-1 SAC) moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings with Mars Hill at 16 points with two games remaining. Tusculum also assured itself a home game in the opening round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament, as the Pioneers can finish no worse than fourth in the league standings. The Indians (7-8-1, 2-4-1 SAC) moved into sole possession of sixth place in the SAC with the point.
Most of the good scoring chances in the match failed to hit the goal, with the best scoring opportunities going high off the foot of Tusculum's Roberto Pimentel in the first half and Catawba's Danny Sassano with six minutes left in the second half.
In the first overtime, Sassano missed wide to the left early in the period and Pimentel fired high with three minutes left. In the second overtime, Spencer Preston intercepted a back pass and took a shot that slammed off Tusculum keeper Andy Goellner (three saves) and caromed away, while Indian goalie Evan Harvey (six saves) made a strong stop on a shot by Pimentel.
Tusculum finished the match with a 16-10 advantage in shots, though only a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. The Pioneers attempted eight corners while the Indians had six, and Catawba was called for 12 fouls to six by Tusculum.
The Pioneers head to the road for their final two matches of the season, beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. at Wingate.
