Emmanuel Aboagye scored twice in the first nine minutes of
action as 18th-ranked Carson-Newman College picked up a 4-1 victory
over Tusculum College in a South Atlantic Conference men's soccer
match Tuesday night at McCown Field.
The Eagles led 3-0 at halftime en route to improving to 9-2-1
overall and 6-0-0 in the SAC, while the Pioneers suffered their
third straight loss and fell to 2-7-3 overall and 1-4-0 in
conference action.
Robert Hill had a goal and an assist for the Eagles in the win,
while Matthew Finlay converted a penalty kick in the 21st minute.
The Pioneers scored their lone goal of the match in the 60th minute
off the foot of Janik Bold.
Aboagye scored at 2:29 as he took a pass from Daniel Zitt and
eluded the defense at the top of the box, then added his second of
the night and fourth of the year at 8:20 following a feed from
Hill.
Finlay tallied at 20:36 on a penalty kick to give Carson-Newman a
3-0 lead into halftime, then Hill notched his eighth goal of the
season at an even 50 minutes by heading home a corner kick by Ben
Backstrom.
Bold spoiled the clean sheet of the Eagles at 59:03 with his first
career goal, as he finished off a cross from Javier Portillo in
front of the Carson-Newman net.
The Eagles finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots over the
Pioneers, and held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. The match was a
physical contest, featuring 27 fouls (18 to Carson-Newman) and
seven cards. Andy Goellner made eight saves in goal for Tusculum,
while Carson-Newman's Jordan Moore finished with two stops.
Tusculum returns to action Saturday afternoon at home against
Anderson, with a revised game time of 5:00 p.m.
