GREENWOOD, S.C. --- Curtis Berger's goal in the in 47th minute proved to be the match-winner as the Tusculum College men's soccer team defeated host Lander University, 2-1 Saturday night.
The Pioneers (1-2-2) record their first win of the season and the first TC victory for head coach Steve Voltz. Lander falls to 2-3 on the season.
Horton McKinney notched his first goal of the season, when he gathered in a corner kick from Andres Jarquin at the 33:53 mark to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.
The Bearcats tied the match at 1-1, when Craig Hughes scored on an assist by Aaron Brittain in the 39th minute.
In the opening moments of the second half, Berger put the Pioneers back in front with his first Tusculum goal, which was assisted by Javier Portillo at the 46:23 mark.
Tusculum keeper Andy Goellner faced 20 shots as he accounted for 10 saves in going the distance for the Pioneers for his first career victory in goal.
Tusculum returns home this Wednesday when the Pioneers host Belmont Abbey College for a 7 p.m. match from the Niswonger Sports Complex / Pioneer Field.
