Pioneers remain undefeated with 20-8 win over Lees-McRae

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tristan Kirkham, Nate Raymond and Lorenz Brown each scored five goals to lead Tusculum University to a 20-8 victory over Lees-McRae College in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Pioneer Field.

Kale Lawrence added two goals and two assists, Jordan Daniel had a goal and an assist and Aiden Caskey and Cody Webb also scored for the Pioneers, who are off to a 4-0 start for the second straight season. Tusculum outshot Lees-McRae 45-32, won 24 of the 30 faceoffs in the match and went 3-for-4 with the man advantage in the victory.

J.P. Galloway led the Bobcats (0-4) with two goals and two assists, Ryan Bird scored twice and Spence Combs had a goal and an assist for Lees-McRae, which trailed 10-3 after one quarter and 13-4 at halftime.

With his five goals, Raymond set a new program record for consecutive games with a goal at 14, breaking the old mark of 13 set by Keegan Bell during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Brown extended his streak of consecutive games with a goal to 13, and stretched his school-record point streak to 20 straight contests.

Kirkham had a career-high seven points on five goals and two assists, and has scored at least four goals in each of the Pioneers' first four matches. Raymond and Brown each had an assist for a six-point night, with two assists to Wesley Phillips and one each from Sean Dunn and Andy Michalski.

Michalski continued his dominant play on faceoffs, winning 24 of the 28 draws he took and collecting 14 ground balls. Michalski is up to third on the program career ground ball list with 161, 12 behind the record of 173 set by Jake Smith from 2014-16, and has 303 faceoff wins in his career to move within 23 of the school mark of 326 set by Alexander Kleinberg from 2014-17.

Lees-McRae went up 2-0 in the first three minutes on goals from Tyler Flannelly and Bird, but Raymond kicked off a run of four goals for the Pioneers in a span of three minutes which gave the Pioneers a 4-2 lead with 9:07 left in the opening quarter. Galloway scored with 6:04 remaining to pull the Bobcats within 4-3, but Tusculum closed the quarter with six goals in the final 5:20, including two apiece from Raymond and Brown, to go up 10-3 after one period.

Combs broke the Pioneers' run with 13:21 left in the second quarter, but goals from Brown, Kirkham and Daniel sent the Pioneers ahead 13-4 heading to halftime. Tusculum would score seven straight goals during the run, including man-up goals from Brown and Raymond during the third quarter as the Pioneers led 16-4 heading to the fourth.

In the fourth quarter, each team scored four times with Kirkham netting three for the Pioneers and Galloway scoring a goal along with two assists for the Bobcats. Caskey closed out the scoring for the Pioneers with his first career goal with 2:46 remaining.

Tusculum finished with 33 ground balls in the match, with Will Cookman contributing four and two apiece from Phillips, Fred Harbinson and Kirkham. Lees-McRae had 20 ground balls, paced by four from Bird and three from Flannelly. Clay Adams was best on faceoffs for the Bobcats, going 4-for-8. Tusculum was just 12-for-20 on clears and had 24 turnovers, while Lees-McRae turned the ball over 17 times and was 14-for-21 on clears.

In goal, Ross Geiger played nearly 51 minutes for the Pioneers and had 10 saves, with Riley Semmes making four saves in the final nine minutes. Antonio Cruz had 15 saves in goal for the Bobcats.

Tusculum will be on the road Saturday to visit Emmanuel in a non-conference game beginning at 2 p.m. The Lions are 0-2 following a 20-5 loss to Lander on Wednesday afternoon.
