Shields named to Tusculum Men's lacrosse coaching staff

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Daniel Shields has been named to the Tusculum College men's lacrosse coaching staff announced head coach and director of lacrosse Richard Carrington.

Shields comes to Tusculum after serving as the offensive coordinator at Mercer Island High School in Mercer Island, Washington. In 2015, Shields helped Mercer Island to a 22-1 record and a Division I Washington State Championship.

Shields, a 2014 graduate of the University of Mount Olive, competed on the Trojans' lacrosse team for two seasons. He served as a team captain at Mount Olive and ranked among the nation's top point leaders in 2013 and 2014. For his efforts, Shields was named to the All-Conference Carolinas first team in his two years at the Mount Olive, North Carolina school. He was also selected to participate in the prestigious D1/D2 North-South All-Star Game.

"Daniel is the perfect addition to our staff and young program. He's been a top performer and winner at every level," said Carrington. "Last season, our team learned how to compete. This season we need to learn how to finish games and win. We expect Coach Shields to contribute in that progression and make an immediate impact to our offense."

Prior to Mount Olive, Shields played at St. Andrews University where he earned All-Conference Carolinas first team accolades with the Knights.

Before Saint Andrews, Shields attended Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, New York. Shields helped Onondaga to a NJCAA National Championship in 2010.

"I want to thank (Tusculum President) Dr. Nancy B. Moody, Mrs. Davis, and Coach Carrington for this opportunity to coach on the collegiate level," said Shields. "I come from a family of lacrosse coaches, and it's my dream to continue the family tradition. The Block System, the unbelievable facilities, and the caring people really make Tusculum a special place, and I couldn't think of a better institution to begin my collegiate coaching career."

Shields, a native of Perth, Australia, came to the United States to complete his last two years of high school. As a high school senior he was a US Lacrosse All-American and 2009 Washington State Player of the Year.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in recreation and leisure studies from Mount Olive.
