Shupp named Tusculum assistant men's lacrosse coach

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College head men's lacrosse coach Richard Carrington has announced that Kevin Shupp has joined the staff as an assistant coach for the Pioneers.

Shupp comes to Tusculum after spending one season as the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator at Division III Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania. Prior to that, Shupp was the defensive coordinator and goalie specialist at Division III Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia for two seasons. At both schools, Shupp helped prepare scouting reports and helped with training and conditioning for members of the team.

"I had the pleasure of coaching Kevin in college, and I've continued to follow his career for the last five years. As a player, Kevin was a leader who faced every challenge with a determined and focused confidence," said Carrington, who will begin his fourth season as Tusculum head coach in 2017. "He brings that same confidence and determination to his coaching style, and we expect that to make a great positive impact on our young defensive unit."

From 2009 to 2012, Shupp was a four-year starting goalkeeper at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania, where he played under Carrington during the 2010 season. At Alvernia, Shupp was a two-year captain, twice named team Most Valuable Player and also twice earned conference Goalie of the Week honors. Shupp was also selected to the Middle Atlantic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team following his junior season, and set the school record for career saves with 765.

After earning a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice from Alvernia in 2012, Shupp spent one year at Union County College as an assistant coach before accepting the position at Piedmont. Shupp graduated with a Master of Business Administration degree from Piedmont in 2015, earning cum laude honors.

"I would like to thank Coach Carrington, Director of Athletics Doug Jones, and President Dr. Nancy B. Moody for their confidence in me and for the opportunity to work at Tusculum College," Shupp said. "Over the past three years, I have followed the program's growth and I am extremely excited to be a part of this program."

Shupp, a native of Cranford, New Jersey, replaces Anthony Mackin, who stepped down after three seasons to accept the head coaching position at Averett University in Danville, Virginia.

The Pioneers completed their third season of competition in 2016 by earning a berth in the South Atlantic Conference Tournament for the first time. Tusculum also picked up its first-ever postseason win with a come-from-behind 12-9 victory at Coker in the first round of the conference tournament, before falling to eventual tournament champion Lenoir-Rhyne in the semifinals.
