Alex Dantzler scored four times during a run of seven unanswered
goals that boosted Catawba College to a 15-8 win over Tusculum
College in a South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse match
Saturday night at Shuford Stadium.
Dantzler finished with five goals for the Indians (5-4, 3-1 SAC),
who outshot the Pioneers (4-5, 0-4 SAC) by a 47-28 margin and won
18 of the 26 faceoffs in the contest. Davis Hughes had two goals
and three assists and Tyler Ulrich and Adam Hebert scored twice
each for Catawba in the win.
Mitch Chapman led the Pioneers with three goals, Ben Boyd scored
twice and Alexander Kleinberg, Darrin Wilson and Jack Timerson had
single goals for Tusculum, which led 2-1 midway through the first
quarter before Catawba scored seven in a row over a span of nearly
26 minutes to take an 8-2 lead in the third quarter.
Tusculum opened the scoring just over three minutes into the first
half on a goal by Timerson, but Catawba's Steven Ridolfo tied the
contest on a man-up goal with 9:38 left in the opening quarter.
Kleinberg tallied just 16 seconds later to put the Pioneers back on
top 2-1, but it would be their last goal for 26 1/2 minutes as the
Indians scored four straight goals to go up 5-2 after one
quarter.
The Indians scored both goals of the second quarter as Dantzler and
Zach LaFavre scored to extend the Catawba lead to 7-2 at halftime.
Dantzler made it 8-2 just under four minutes into the third quarter
before Chapman scored his first of the game with 6:51 left in the
third to end the Pioneer drought. Ty Sellers and Boyd exchanged
goals in the latter stages of the third quarter to make it a 9-4
Catawba lead entering the final period.
The fourth quarter saw the teams combine for 10 goals, including
four in a stretch of 1:04 early in the period that left the Indians
with a 12-5 lead. Trailing 13-5 with just under seven minutes left,
the Pioneers scored three of the next four goals with Wilson, Boyd
and Chapman tallying in a span of 5 1/2 minutes. Hughes closed the
scoring for Catawba with a man-up goal with seven seconds left.
Chapman, Kleinberg and Tyler Schafer each finished with four ground
balls for the Pioneers, with Schafer joining Jake Smith as the team
leader with two caused turnovers. Ulrich had four ground balls to
lead the Indians, while Daniel Rew (6-for-8), Daniel Couhenhour
(4-for-5) and Ulrich (3-for-4) all had strong performances on
faceoffs.
Catawba finished 2-for-6 with the man advantage while Tusculum was
1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities. The Pioneers finished the match
with 17 turnovers to 15 by the Indians, and Tusculum was 20-for-23
on clears while Catawba finished 18-for-22 as a team.
Eddie Schoenig got the start in goal for Tusculum and had five
saves, with John Perrucci finishing with three stops in the fourth
quarter. Pete Wesselman started in goal for Catawba and had five
first-half saves before giving way to Ryan Applegate, who had three
saves in the second half.
The Pioneers will return home Thursday night to take on Mars Hill
in a SAC game starting at 7 p.m. at Pioneer Field.
