Fourth-ranked Limestone College outscored Tusculum College 9-0
in the second quarter en route to a 21-3 victory in non-conference
men's lacrosse action Tuesday afternoon.
Todd Nakasuji led the Saints (6-1) with three goals and three
assists, while five other players had two goals apiece to help
Limestone build a 13-1 halftime lead. Overall, the Saints outshot
the Pioneers 59-38, including 31-2 in the decisive second
quarter.
Darrin Wilson, Ben Boyd and Kellen Asmundson scored goals for the
Pioneers (4-3), who were playing a ranked opponent for the first
time in the fledgling history of the program. Starting goalkeeper
John Perrucci made a season-high 17 saves for Tusculum after being
peppered with 34 shots on goal in the first three quarters.
The Saints dashed to a 4-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the
game before Wilson got the Pioneers on the board on a man-up goal
with less than a second to go in the first quarter. In the second
quarter, Limestone received goals from eight different players to
take a 13-1 lead to intermission.
Limestone built its lead to 14-1 early in the third quarter before
Tusculum's Boyd scored with 12:26 to go for the second goal of the
game from the Pioneers. The Saints would tack on three more goals
to go on top 17-2 entering the final 15 minutes, and held a 21-2
advantage until Asmundson scored with 10 seconds left to close the
scoring.
Boyd led the Pioneers with four ground balls in the game, while
Jake Smith had a pair of ground balls along with two caused
turnovers. Mitch Chapman also had two caused turnovers and claimed
a pair of ground balls. Kevin Reisman paced the Saints with 16
ground balls, largely on the strength of a 15-for-19 performance on
faceoffs.
Eddie Schoenig II played the fourth quarter for the Pioneers and
made three saves, while the trio of starter Patrick Sheridan (8)
and backups Dustyn Lyons (3) and Steven Christofides (5) combined
for 16 saves for the Saints.
Tusculum finished the game 1-for-3 on extra-man opportunities,
while the Saints cashed in on their only man-up chance of the game
late in the fourth quarter. The Saints were a perfect 18-for-18 on
clears, and the Pioneers finished 12-for-14.
The Pioneers will be home on Saturday at noon against Coker in a
South Atlantic Conference game from Pioneer Field.
