Ryan Taylor scored the winning goal with 1:43 left in the fourth
quarter as Brevard College rallied for a 10-9 win over Tusculum
College in a South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse match
Saturday afternoon.
Andrew Bonnie scored five goals and added an assist for the
Tornados (3-4, 1-1 SAC), who overcame deficits of 4-1 and 7-5 to
defeat the Pioneers (4-2, 0-2 SAC), who came from behind twice in
the fourth quarter to tie the game but could not get the equalizer
after Taylor's tally.
Darrin Wilson and David Fernandes scored two goals each for the
Pioneers, with single goals coming from Brad Sage, Ben Boyd, Mitch
Chapman, Kellen Asmundson and Jack Timerson. Matthew Dropuljic and
Al Blackman each had two goals for the Tornados, who were outshot
29-26 by the Pioneers and committed 16 turnovers to just seven by
Tusculum.
The score was tied 7-7 after three quarters, but Dropuljic scored
with 9:26 left to give the Tornados an 8-7 lead. Boyd responded for
Tusculum with 5:34 left to square the score at 8-8, but Dropuljic
tallied again with 3:24 remaining to restore the Tornados' one-goal
lead.
The Pioneers tied the game with 2:37 to go on the second goal of
the game from Fernandes, but the Tornados won the ensuing faceoff
and worked the ball until Taylor scored the go-ahead goal with 1:43
on the clock. Tusculum got possession on the next faceoff, but a
wide shot with 51 seconds left and a turnover with 27 seconds to go
sealed the victory for Brevard.
Tusculum jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Timerson and Wilson
in the first 8 1/2 minutes, but Bonnie scored his first goal of the
day to make it a 2-1 game heading to the second quarter. Sage
scored at 36 seconds and Asmundson at 1:16 of the second quarter to
push the Pioneers on top 4-1, but Bonnie responded with three
straight goals to send the game to halftime tied 4-4.
Tusculum outshot Brevard 20-12 in the first half and had a 19-11
advantage in ground balls. The Pioneers also won six out of 10
faceoffs in the half and killed off the only man-up opportunity for
either team.
In the third quarter, Wilson and Blackman exchanged goals to keep
the score tied at 5-5 with 8:13 to go in the quarter. Fernandes
gave the Pioneers a 6-5 lead with 7:42 on the clock and Chapman
tallied with the man advantage to extend the Tusculum margin to 7-5
with 3:59 left in the quarter. However, Blackman and Bonnie
responded with goals to knot the game at 7-7 heading to the final
period.
Tusculum finished the game with 29 ground balls, including six from
Jake Smith and four each from Alexander Kleinberg and Steven
Raimondi. Smith also had two caused turnovers along with Tyler
Schafer, while Timerson and Wilson shared the team lead with six
shots at the Brevard goal. John Perrucci finished with 12 saves in
goal for the Pioneers.
Brevard goalie Andrew Reilly also had a team-high five ground balls
to go along with his 1l saves, while Kodi Roberts had four ground
balls and went 8-for-15 at the faceoff dot. overall, the Tornados
won 13 of the 23 faceoffs in the game, including four of six in the
decisive fourth quarter.
Tusculum went 1-for-3 with the extra man, while the Pioneer penalty
killers were perfect on four man-down opportunities. Both teams
were nearly perfect on clears, with Brevard going 21-for-22 and
Tusculum 20-for-22.
The Pioneers will be on the road Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a
non-conference game at 5th-ranked Limestone.
