ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum University's Morgan Cain has been named the 2024 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Freshman of the Year announced league officials Friday.
Cain, a native of Cork, Ireland, was also named to the All-SAC second team.
He has appeared in nine events this year where he has a 72.88 stroke average, which is the best in program history by a TU rookie. He has recorded a team-best 15 rounds at par or better including seven under par with four rounds in the 60s.
Cain has recorded five top-10 finishes including three times in the top-five. He tied for runner-up honors in the collegiate debut at the King Invitational where he posted a four-under par total of 66-70=136. He finished second at last month's Ralph Hargett Memorial where he shot a 70-71-66=207 (-9). His 207 score is the third-lowest 54-hole total in TU history.
He fired a seven-under par score of 72-70-67=209 at the Saint Leo Invitational where he tied for fifth place.
He becomes only the second TU rookie to earn SAC Freshman of the Year honors and the first since Josh Vandeventer earned the award in 2022.
He helped the Pioneers to tournament wins at the King Invitational and the Bob Dibble Intercollegiate. Tusculum also finished runner-up at the Limestone Fall Invitational and the Hargett Memorial.
The Pioneers will be competing at the SAC Championship in Orangeburg, South Carolina beginning Sunday and running through Tuesday. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the Orangeburg Country Club and hosted by Newberry College.
