Kollberg, Pioneers claim titles at King Invitational

BRISTOL, Tenn. --- Thomas Kollberg fired a career-low 67 to lead the Tusculum University men's golf team to win the 2022 King University Invitational at the Golf Club of Bristol.

The Pioneers carded a three-under team score of 277 as TU rallied from a five-stroke deficit to give first-year head coach Hunter Chandley his first tournament victory.  Tusculum's two-day total of 564 (+4) is the fifth-lowest 36-hole score in program history, while its final round 277 is the third-lowest round in the TU record book.

Kollberg captured medalist honors as the TU senior finished with a tournament total 69-67=136 (-4) and won by two strokes over Erskine's Johannes Lindstrom and fellow first round co-leader Kritpas Ratanaprasar, who both finished at 138 (-2).

Kollberg roared out of the gate and was five-under after six holes including an eagle three on the par-5 sixth hole to take the lead. He would bogey three of his next five holes but finished strong going one-under par on his final seven holes to secure his first collegiate medal. His 136 is tied for the seven-best 36-hole total by a Pioneer. His 67 surpasses the previous personal best of 68 he fired at last year's Tusculum Invitational.

Erskine's Guillermo De Miguel finished fourth with 72-67=139). Tusculum freshman Nicholas Taggart and Guillermo Salazar of the Indiana University of Pennsylvania both tied for fifth place individually at even par 140.

Taggart carded back-to-back rounds of 70 as the TU rookie posted two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars to cap off an outstanding collegiate debut.

Tusculum sophomore Liam Hermansson climbed 12 spots on the leaderboard with his even par round of 70 to finish with 144 and tie for 12th place.  TU's Blake Williams jumped 18 spots on the board and finished tied for 29th place with 149 including Tuesday's final round 70. Senior Riley Brown finished with 74-76=150 to place 32nd.

Tusculum won the tournament crown by 10 shots over runner-up Erskine B (574). IUP was third with 575, followed by Emory & Henry (576), King (578), King B (580), Emmanuel (593), North Greenville (599), Roane State (619) and UVA Wise (630).

The Pioneers return to action next week (Oct. 3-4) for the Richard Rendleman Invitational in Salisbury, North Carolina.
