Holden second, Pioneers third after day one of SAC Championship

CHUCKEY, Tenn. --- Tusculum University's Dominic Barron Holden carded a career-low 66 and is in second place after day one of the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Championship.

The three-day, 54-hole championship is being host by Tusculum and held at the par-72, 6,860-yard Graysburg Hills Golf Course.

Holden paced a TU charge as the Pioneers posted a team score of 283 (-5) and are tied for third place after the opening 18 holes on Sunday. Tusculum is six shots behind first round leader Queens University of Charlotte, who blistered the field with an 11-under par 277.

Defending champion and No. 3 nationally-ranked Lincoln Memorial is second with 282. Joining TU in third place is Newberry College with 283. Limestone University (No. 14 in NCAA II) is fifth with 286 (-2), followed by Coker University (287), Carson-Newman University (No. 2 in NCAA II – 288), Lenoir-Rhyne University (291), Anderson University (297), Catawba College (298), Wingate University (300), UVA Wise (309) and Mars Hill (328).

Luke Harries of LMU, the 2022 SAC Men's Golfer of the Year, leads the championship with a sizzling seven-under par 65 and leads by one shot over Holden. Harries recorded a pair of eagles, four birdies, 11 pars and one bogey on his card. Holden's round included six birdies, one eagle, eight pars and two bogeys.

Queens has three players in the top-seven including the duo of Drake Wilcox and Ollie Smith, who carded rounds of 67 (-5) and are tied for third place.

Tusculum senior Nicholas Marchese and freshman Liam Hermansson both carded even par rounds of 72 and are tied for 15^th place, Junior Tom Kollberg is 25^th with 73, while sophomore Liam van Deventer shot 75 and is tied for 39^th. The Pioneers led the 13-team field with 20 birdies on Sunday.

The second round of the SAC Championship will be played on Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
