Van Deventer, Pioneers take first day lead at Tusculum Invitational

CHUCKEY, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's golf team posted a three-under par 285 to take the first round lead at the 28th annual Tusculum Invitational at Graysburg Hills Golf Course.

TU sophomore Liam van Deventer carded a four-under 68 and shares the opening day lead with Newberry's Alex Pillar. Newberry is two shots behind the Pioneers with 287, while Anderson is third with 288. West Georgia is fourth with 289 and Milligan A is fifth with 290.

Van Deventer is the defending medalist for the tournament as he led wire-to-wire in last year's Tusculum Invitational. In Monday's opening round, he was even par after his first nine which included birdies on two par fives which were followed immediately by a bogey. He posted a four-under par 32 on his inward nine which included four birdies and five pars.

Ohio Dominican is sixth with 294, followed by Christian Brothers (296), Tusculum B (299), Shorter (299), Spartanburg Methodist (303), Walters State (305), Catawba (309), UVA Wise (315), Milligan B (321), Roane State (322), Emory & Henry (324) and Mars Hill (328).

Four players are locked in a tie for third place with 69 (-3) including Robert Holden (Ohio Dominican), Austin Fulton (West Georgia), Calahan Keever (Anderson) and Oliwer Toiminen (West Georgia).

Tusculum's Isak Holter shot a one-under par 71 and is tied for eighth place with three other players including Tusculum B's Blake Williams.

TU's Dominic Barron Holden shot 72 and is tied for 12th, Nicolas Marches is locked in a tie for 27th with 74 (+2) and Thomas Kollberg is 38th with a 76.

Mark Healy posted 75 for Tusculum B, followed by Liam Hermansson (76 – T38), Riley Brown (77 – T48) and Fynn Hessenkaemper (78 – T53).

TU's Daxx Carr is playing as an individual competitor and is 74th after shooting 82. Jordan Williams and Liam Colohan, also competing individually, are tied for 82nd place with 83.

The final round of the 36-hole tournament will be played on Tuesday with groups teeing off starting at 9 a.m. on the par-72, 6,882-yard layout which is hosting the 2022 South Atlantic Conference Championship next month.

The Pioneers have won the Tusculum Invitational the past two years and are 11-time winners of their home spring tournament.
