Pioneers in 11th place to open SAC Championship

ANDERSON, S.C. --- The Tusculum men's golf team shot and opening round 326 and is in 11th place at the 2018 South Atlantic Conference Championship.  The three-day, 54-hole tournament is being held at the par-72, 7,002-yard Cobb's Glen Country Club.

Lincoln Memorial and Queens University of Charlotte each finished with scores of 296 and share the lead. Carson-Newman is third with 298, followed by host Anderson (300), Coker (301), Newberry (302), Wingate (303), Catawba (304), Lenoir-Rhyne (304), Mars Hill (305) and Tusculum.

Anderson's Jake Miller carded the low round of the day with his five-under par 67 and leads by two shots over the duo of Harry Butler (Mars Hill) and Henry Bryden (Queens) who each posted a two-under par 70.

Tusculum sophomore Anthony Bolden, playing in his first SAC Championship, posted a four-over par round of 76 and is in 21st place.  He was even par through seven holes but bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes put him at 38 on his outward nine. He got to one-over on the day following a birdie on the 12th hole, but followed with three straight bogeys.  Bolden finished with three consecutive pars to finish with 38 on the back nine.

Senior David Whinery, who is the lone Pioneer this week with SAC Championship experience, is tied for 36th place following his opening 78 which included a birdie on the 14th hole.

Senior Brandon Alexander, who was also making his SAC Championship debut, shot 86 and is tied for 52nd place.  Alexander was 15 over par for his round after the 13th hole, but finished one-under par for his final five holes, including an eagle three on the par-five 15th hole.

Tusculum freshman Bennett Noe is tied for 52nd place with Alexander following his first day 86 which including a birdie on No. 8, while rookie teammate Matthew Kowalski is 55th after his 89 which included a birdie on his fourth hole.

The second round will be played on Monday with Tusculum teeing off at 8:30 a.m.
