Whinery shoots 71 to finish fourth at Dyas Invitational

CARROLLTON, Ga. --- Tusculum senior David Whinery carded his second consecutive one-under par 71 to post a two-day total of 142 (-2) to finish tied for fourth place at the 2017 Matt Dyas Invitational.  The two-day, 36-hole event was held at the Oak Mountain Championship Course and hosted by the University of West Georgia.

The Pioneers logged a final round 313 to post a team score of 609 and finish 13th overall.

Clayton State defeated Young Harris in a scorecard playoff as the Lakers won team honors over the Mountain Lions. The two teams finished tied with scores of 582.  North Georgia and Lee University tied for third place honors with 583, while Newberry rounded out the top-five with 584.  North Alabama was sixth with 586, followed by Christian Brothers (590), Mississippi College (594), West Georgia (595), King (596), Union, Tenn. (604), West Alabama (608), Tusculum (609), Lewis (613) and Albany State (626).

West Georgia's Samuel Jones captured individual medalist honors as he finished with a five-under par 139, including Tuesday's final round 69 (-3).  Jones two shots clear of runner-ups Harry Bolton of Newberry and North Georgia's Matt Elliott at 141 (-3).  Whinery, Valter Andersson (Young Harris),  Thomas Luther (North Alabama) and Trey Pearson (Young Harris) finished in a four-way tie for fourth place with 142 (-2).

Tusculum sophomore Anthony Bolden tied for 51st place with his two-day score of 76-77=153. Freshman Bennett Noe placed 60th with 71-85=156, while senior Brandon Alexander was 66th with 78-80=158.  Rookie Carter Simon rounded out the scoring with 85-86=171 to finish 76th.

Tusculum wraps up the fall portion of its schedule. TC will be in action again Feb. 12-13 at the Lincoln Memorial Spring Kickoff in Fleming Island, Florida.
