CONOVER, N.C. --- Tusculum seniors Brandon Alexander and David Whinery each carded opening round scores of 77 and the duo is tied for 48th place at the 2017 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional Preview Tournament.
The two-day, 36-hole event is being held at the par-72, 6,635-yard Robert Trent Jones, Jr. Golf Club at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa. The 17-team event is serving as preview for the host site of the 2018 NCAA Super Regional, which will be held at Rock Barn this May.
Tusculum posted a team score of 312 and is in 16th place. Barton leads the team competition with Monday's 290 score, five shots ahead of Lincoln Memorial (295). Coker is third with 296 while three schools are tied for fourth place with 297 including North Greenville, Catawba and host Lenoir-Rhyne.
Belmont Abbey is seventh with 298, followed by Wingate (300), King (301), North Georgia (302), Erskine (302), Flagler (304), Brevard (308), Southern Wesleyan (310), Queens University of Charlotte (311), Tusculum and Mars Hill (331).
Barton's Bryson Boyette has the day one lead following his impressive four-under par 68, which is two shots clear of BC teammate Justin Plane who shot 70 (-2).
Tusculum rookie Bennett Noe accounted for a 78 and is tied for 55th place while sophomore Anthony Bolden recorded an 80 and is in 65th place. TC junior Hunter Chandley shot a 96 (85th place) to round out the Tusculum scoring.
The final round will be contested on Tuesday.
