LOUDON, Tenn. --- Tusculum's David Whinery fired a five-under par 67 to win the 2017 Tennessee River Rumble, which was being held at the Tennessee National Golf Club. The Pioneers shot a team score of 297 and finished sixth in the weather-abbreviated tournament hosted by Lincoln Memorial
The host Raisplitters won the team title with 288, four shots better than runner-up Carson-Newman and six shots in front of Mars Hill (294).
Whinery captured his first career medalist honor as he posted a four-under par 32 on the front nine and followed with a one-under par 35 on the back nine. Whinery won by a single shot over LMU's Sam Broadhurst, who shot 68 (-4).
Wingate and Lee University tied for fourth place with 295, followed by Tusculum, Brevard (298), LMU B (302), Lenoir-Rhyne (303), Anderson (312), Walters State (319) and Catawba (320).
Tusculum's Preston Tucker carded a 74 to tie for 21st place, while Taylor Smith and Chris Hutson each posted rounds of 78 and tied for 42nd. Anthony Bolden finished with 80 to tie for 51st to round out the team scoring. Senior Cameron Dugger, playing as an individual competitor, tied for 30th place with a 76.
Tusculum will be in action Apr. 23-25 as they compete at the 2017 South Atlantic Conference Championship, which will be hosted by Catawba at the Country Club of Salisbury.
