ETOWAH, N.C. --- Taylor Smith shot back-to-back rounds of 70 to finish with a four-under 140 for the tournament to lead the Tusculum College men's golf team to first place honors at the 2016 Etowah Intercollegiate. The Pioneers finished with a two-day score of 575 (-1) to win by 12 shots over runner-up and host Brevard College.
Smith captured medalist honors for the first time in his career as he won by two shots over teammate Cameron Dugger (69-73=142, -2) and Adam Lumley of Mars Hill University (68-74=142, -2).
The Pioneers fired a final day score of 290 to post 575. Brevard was second, followed by Mars Hill (590), King University (601), Virginia-Wise (604), Erskine College B (606), Erskine (611), Brevard B (612) and Christian Brothers University (645).
Smith recorded 10 birdies for the tournament and shot six-under par on the par 5 holes alone.
Tusculum placed three players on the All-Tournament Team, including Smith, Dugger and junior David Whinery, who posted 71-73=144 to tie for fifth place. Senior Chris Hutson tied for 12th place with 75-74=149, while freshman Anthony Bolden shot 85-82=167 to finish 45th.
For Tusculum head coach Bob Dibble, this marks the 42nd team title the Pioneers have won during his hall of fame career in Greeneville.
The Pioneers return to action next Monday and Tuesday when they host the Tusculum Fall Classic at Link Hills Country Club. Tusculum is the defending champion of this event.
