Hawkins shoots 71, Pioneers in 10th at SAC Championship

ETOWAH, N.C. --- Tusculum College's Brad Hawkins fired a one-under par 71 and has climbed into a tie for 10th place following the second round of the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Championship Monday at the Etowah Valley Golf Club. The Pioneers carded a team score of 299 to give the Orange and Black a total of 610 which moves them up to 10th place. Monday's score was a 12-shot improvement on Sunday's opening day 311.

Hawkins' 71 was one of only four players on Monday to shoot under-par as the 2016 SAC Player of the Year is five shots of the lead, currently held by Jon Noble of Queens University of Charlotte, who has the 36-hole lead at 143 (-1).

Lenoir-Rhyne University and Carson-Newman University continue to share the lead after the second round as both are tied with 591, two shots ahead of third place Lincoln Memorial University at 593, including a Monday-best 293. Coker College is third with 596, followed by Mars Hill University (598), Newberry College (602), Wingate University (602), Queens (604), Brevard College (605), Tusculum (610), Catawba College (620) and Anderson University (620).

Hawkins' round included three birdies, including one on the 18th hole to record his 13th sub-par round of the year, which is already a new TC single-season mark. It was also his 21st sub-par round, which is one off the school record 22 posted by Chase Carroll from 2005-2009.

Senior Nick Forsberg is tied for 32nd place with 77-76=153, including Monday's 76. Forsberg was six-over par after 14 holes, but bounced back by going two-under for his last four holes, including birdies on three of his final four holes.

Junior Preston Tucker is also tied for 32nd place at 153, including Monday's two-over par 74 as he shot one-under 35 for his inward nine.

Junior Chris Hutson is tie for 43rd place with 156 following back-to-back rounds of 78. Junior Taylor Smith rounded out the TC scoring with 84-78=162.

The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday on the 6,892-yard, par-72 layout.
