Four Pioneers named to Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar Team

NORMAN, Okla. --- Four Tusculum College student-athletes have been named to the 2015-2016 NCAA Division II Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar Men's Golf Team.  Seniors Nick Forsberg and Brad Hawkins return to the All-America Scholar Team for a second straight season, while juniors Taylor Smith and Preston Tucker make their inaugural appearances.

Ninety-one (91) Division II golfers in the country have been recognized by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). To be eligible, an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 70 percent of his team's competitive rounds and have a stroke average under 78.0 and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.2. Honorees must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

Tusculum's four honorees are the most in the South Atlantic Conference, which boasted 13 representatives.

Hawkins, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, has a 3.61 cumulative grade point average and was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® first team earlier this summer.  The sport management major has been selected to the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.

Hawkins, who was named to the GCAA Division II PING All-America Team, posted a 70.71 stroke average this season, breaking the previous TC best of 72.08 set by Chase Carroll during the 2008-2009 campaign.  Hawkins was named the 2016 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year, becoming the fourth Pioneer in program history to earn the league's top golf honor.

His seasonal stroke average also tops the SAC single-season record average of 71.59, carded by Newberry's Daniel Stanley in the 2009-2010 campaign. Hawkins finished in the top-five in nine of his 12 events this year, including medalist honors at the State Farm Intercollegiate, Pioneer Classic and Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate.  He qualified for the NCAA II Super Regional last May where he finished in 15th place.

Hawkins posted a school single-season record 16 sub-par rounds, with nine of those in the 60s, including an 18-hole TC and SAC record 63 at the Pioneer Classic last fall.  During the Pioneer Classic, he carded the lowest 36-hole score in school and SAC history with an eight-under par 132.  He also established the 54-hole TC and SAC record with a remarkable 16-under par 200 at the State Farm Intercollegiate.

Hawkins' career scoring average of 71.37 at Tusculum also shatters the college and conference record book.  He breaks Carroll's TC career mark of 74.29 from 2005-09, while also besting the SAC record of 72.80 by Stanley from 2008-2011.  His five career medalist wins are tied for third most at Tusculum, while his 24 career sub-par rounds are a new TC record.  He was also a semifinalist for the 2016 Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.

Forsberg, a native of Staples, Minnesota, also garnered Academic All-America® recognition last month.  He graduated from Tusculum in May with a 3.75 GPA and majored in sport management.  He is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.  He has been named the SAC Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year in each of the last two seasons.

Forsberg closed out his senior campaign with a 72.93 scoring average, which ranks fifth-best in program history while earning All-SAC first team accolades.  He turned in eight sub-par rounds during his senior year and won a share of medalist honors at the Etowah Spring Challenge.  His play helped the Pioneers to five tournament titles and ended his career with a 74.40 stroke average to rank third in Tusculum history.  He garnered All-SAC laurels twice and was a two-time SAC All-Tournament honoree.

Smith, a native of Gray, Tennessee, has a 3.30 GPA and is majoring in business administration.  He is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor and the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

Smith finished third on the team with his 75.42 scoring average while playing in all 11 events this year.  He posted six top-20 finishes, including four times in the top-10 and twice in the top-five.  He tied for fourth place at the Tusculum Fall Classic, including a season-best 68 in the opening round.  He also finished fourth at the Pioneer Classic with a one-under par total of 139.  Smith tied for sixth at the Walters State Invitational and eighth at the Fincastle Collegiate Invitational.

During his Tusculum career, Smith has accounted for a 75.42 stroke average which is currently the 12th lowest in program history.

Tucker rounds out the Tusculum honorees on the GCAA All-America Scholar Team.  The Knoxville, Tennessee product has a 3.90 GPA while majoring in business administration.  He is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Dean's List, President's List, Charles Oliver Gray Honors List and the Athletic Director's Honor Roll.

Tucker's 76.74 stroke average was fifth on the team as he played in 10 events with three top-20 performances, including two times in the top-10.  He tied for ninth place at the Pioneer Classic with a two-day score of 147.  He also tied for 10th place at the Walters State Invitational and tallied a 16th place finish at the Tusculum Fall Classic.
