Three Pioneers named to Capital One Academic All-District Men's At-Large Team

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Three Tusculum College student-athletes have been named to the 2015 Capital One NCAA Division II Academic All-District III Men's At-Large first team, as selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America® tennis player Lukas Winkelmann returns to the Academic All-District team for a third straight season, while golfer Nick Forsberg and tennis player Jonas Winkelmann make their first appearances on the All-District squad.

The Winkelmann brothers become the first siblings in Tusculum College history to both earn Academic All-District honors.

The Tusculum trio advances to the Academic All-America® Men's At-Large ballot, which will be announced next month. Men's at-large sports include: volleyball, crew, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, water polo and wrestling.

LUKAS WINKELMANN

Lukas Winkelmann becomes the first three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District first team honoree in the history of Tusculum men's tennis.

In the classroom, Winkelmann sports a 3.96 cumulative grade point average as a pre-medicine major. He has earned selections to the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll, TC President's List, Charles Oliver Gray Honor Roll, the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic Team.

The Böblingen, Germany native spent the entire season ranked in the top-10 of the ITA/NCAA Division II National Singles Rankings and the top five of the Southeast Region poll. He finished the season with a perfect 18-0 singles record at the top flight and finished his collegiate career with a 50-match regular season winning streak. For his efforts, he was named the SAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year for an unprecedented third straight season.

Earlier this month, he was also named the recipient of the South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for a third straight year, becoming the third 3-time winner in conference history.

Winkelmann completes the sweep of the top two SAC tennis awards, becoming the first SAC men's tennis player to earn Men's Tennis Player of the Year and Scholar Athlete of the Year accolades in the same year in three consecutive seasons.

Winkelmann won five matches and advanced to the finals of the top singles bracket at the ITA Southeast Regional tournament in the fall. He owns wins against regionally ranked opponents from Queens and Bluefield State and was named the SAC Player of the Week twice.

On the doubles side, Lukas teamed with his brother Jonas as the duo compiled a perfect 19-0 record while earning All-SAC first team doubles honors in back-to-back seasons.

Winkelmann finished his collegiate-career with a 70-7 singles record and was a four-time All-SAC performer and was the SAC Freshman of the Year in 2012.

Winkelmann is a two-time Capital One Academic All-America® At-Large first team selection and is looking to become the first three-time Academic All-America® first team honoree in the College's history.

He was named the 2014-15 Tusculum College Male Athlete of the Year, becoming the first three-time winner of the award in school history and only the second TC student-athlete overall to be named Athlete of the Year three times (Susan Starnes - 4-time winner).

Winkelmann has been accepted to the Pennsylvania School of Medicine to continue his pursuit of becoming a dentist.

He was named the 2014-15 Tusculum College Male Athlete of the Year, becoming the first three-time winner of the award in school history and only the second TC student-athlete overall to be named Athlete of the Year three times (Susan Starnes - 4-time winner).

NICK FORSBERG

Nick Forsberg, a junior from Staples, Minnesota, carries a 3.65 GPA while majoring in sport management. He is a three-time member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll. A three-time Dean's List honoree, Forsberg was named to the Charles Oliver Honors List.

He was named the 2015 recipient of the SAC Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year Award and capping off an amazing second half of his junior campaign.

Forsberg earned medalist honors at the 2015 SAC Championship after firing two-day score of 143 (-1) while leading the Pioneers to their first SAC title in school history. He recorded three top-10 finishes and was the runner-up at the Tusculum Invitational in March with a 3-under par 139. His lowest round of the year came at the Tusculum Fall Classic as he carded a 67 in the opening round.

As a team, the Pioneers took home a school single-season record five team titles and advanced to the NCAA Division II Super Regional, where the Pioneers finished 17th.

Forsberg earned All-SAC second team honors as a freshman and was named his team's most valuable player during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. During his sophomore year, he earned runner-up honors at the 2014 SAC Men's Golf Championship.

JONAS WINKELMANN

Jonas Winklemann, a junior from Böblingen, Germany, has a 3.61 cumulative GPA and is majoring in business administration.

On the court, Winkelmann posted a 15-5 singles record, including 8-3 in league play to earn All-SAC honors for a third consecutive year. He owns a 47-13 career singles record and was selected as the SAC Player of the Week earlier this year. He is also 53-8 in doubles as a Pioneer.

The Winkelmann brothers earned a doubles spot on the All-SAC first team for a second-consecutive season. 2015 has been a stellar year so far for the duo as they have compiled a perfect 19-0 record and own a win over a regionally ranked pair from Queens. Only two teams have won at least six games against them and they have won five matches by surrendering three or less games.

Winkelmann is a three-time ITA Scholar Athlete and is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.
