Forsberg named SAC Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College's Nick Forsberg has been named the 2015 South Atlantic Conference Men's Golf Scholar Athlete of the Year announced league officials Monday.

This marks the sixth time a Tusculum men's golfer has earned this honor that recognizes academic achievement, athletic accomplishment, community service and leadership. The SAC Scholar Athlete Award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete in each of the conference's 18 championship sports. The awards are selected by the league's Faculty Athletic Representatives Committee.

Forsberg, a junior from Staples, Minnesota, carries a 3.65 cumulative grade point average while majoring in sport management. He is a three-time member of the South Atlantic Conference Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Tusculum Athletic Director's Honor Roll. A three-time Dean's List honoree, Forsberg was named to the Charles Oliver Honors List.

"Nick is a young man of excellent character and drive," said Tusculum golf coach Bob Dibble. "He has become a leader of our team and has always been very reliable."

Forsberg earned medalist honors at last month's SAC Championship after firing two-day score of 143 (-1) while leading the Pioneers to their first SAC title in school history. He recorded three top-10 finishes and was the runner-up at the Tusculum Invitational in March with a 3-under par 139. His lowest round of the year came at the Tusculum Fall Classic as he carded a 67 in the opening round.

As a team, the Pioneers took home a school single-season record five team titles and are competing at this week's NCAA Division II Super Regional in Dade City, Florida.

Forsberg earned All-SAC second team honors as a freshman and was named his team's most valuable player during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. During his sophomore year, he earned runner-up honors at the 2014 SAC Men's Golf Championship.

In the community, Forsberg has served as a volunteer with the Greene County Food Bank all three years at TC and has volunteered at the Nolichucky View Golf Course as a spotter at golf tournaments. He has worked with the Make-A-Wish foundation as a volunteer and was a junior golf camp worker at the Craguns Golf Resort in his hometown in Minnesota.

Forsberg is also busy on campus as he is the men's golf representative on the Pioneers Student Athlete Advisory Council, while serving as an intern in the Tusculum athletic department.

Forsberg joins Tim Dalton, who earned SAC Scholar Athlete honors in 2002, three-time honoree Chase Carroll (2007, 2008, 2009) and David Talley who was the last Pioneer to win this award in 2013. Tusculum's six honorees are the most by a league men's golf program since 2000.

This marks the 51st time that a Tusculum student-athlete has earned SAC Scholar Athlete of the Year honors, the most by any league member since 1999.
