GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team shot an opening day 293 and is in fourth place at the 22nd annual Tusculum Invitational, which is being held this weekend at Link Hills Country Club.

The Pioneers were led by Nick Forsberg, who fired a one-under par 70, tying him for third place in the race for medalist honors.

Young Harris is the first round leader as the Mountain Lions fired a school record low 281 (NCAA II era) and hold a nine-shot lead over two-time invitational champion Lincoln Memorial (290) and 10 shots ahead of Tiffin (291). Tusculum is fourth, followed by Tennessee Wesleyan (295), Brevard (297), Milligan (297), Anderson (298), Mars Hill (298), Marian (305), Mars Hill B (305), Shorter (305), Spartanburg Methodist (309), Lincoln Memorial B (311), Walters State (312), Virginia-Wise (322), Bluefield State (323) and Urbana (325).

Clark Melton of Young Harris shot a six-under par 65 and has a four-shot lead. Melton's 65 is a YHC record and sets a new Tusculum Invitational opening round record, breaking the previous mark of 66 set by Tusculum's Chris Wynne at the 2006 event.

Tusculum's Taylor Smith shot 73 and is tied for 15th place. Brad Hawkins and Chris Hutson both carded 75 and are tied for 25th. Warren Cheney rounded out the scoring with his 78 (T54th).

Five Tusculum golfers played as individual competitors in the 99-player field. Preston Tucker is in 21st place after posting a 74. Jake Mendenhall shot 78 (T54th), while Coleman Glick posted an 80 (T73rd). Leif Ratliff (83-T86th) and Samuel Davis (86-T93rd) rounded out the scoring for Tusculum.

The 18-team tournament will wrap up on the par-71, 6,733-yard layout for Sunday's final round which will begin with an 11 a.m. shotgun start.
