SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. --- Sophomore Nick Forsberg shot an even par round of 72 and is tied for eighth place following the opening round of the Smoky Mountain Intercollegiate. The two-day, 36-hole event is being held at the 7.088-yard, par-72 Sevierville Golf Club - River Course.

The Pioneers posted a team score of 307 and are tied for 11th place, but are just six strokes away from cracking into the top-five of the 18-team tournament field.

Forsberg, a 2013 All-South Atlantic Conference second team selection, is four shots out of the individual lead, currently held by Clayton Present of Limestone with a four-under par 68.

Clayton State has the first day lead in the team competition as the Lakers carded a two-under par score of 286, eight shots ahead of Queens (294). Limestone is third with 295, followed by North Georgia (296), Lincoln Memorial (301), Belmont Abbey (302), Wingate (302), Lee (303), Coker (306) and West Alabama (306). Tusculum is tied for 11th place with host Carson-Newman and Young Harris. King is 14th with 309, followed by Catawba (310), Shorter (311), Brevard (312) and Lenoir-Rhyne (318).

Tusculum junior Warren Cheney is tied for 18th place following his opening day 74. Junior Coleman Glick is 72nd with his 80, while TC rookie Chris Hutson shot an 81 in his Pioneer debut and is tied for 77th place. Junior Leif Ratliff posted an 84 and is tied for 87th place.

The tournament's final round will be played on Tuesday.
