Pioneers in third place after day one of SAC Men's Golf Championship

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum men's golf team carded an opening day 307 and is in third place following the first round of the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championship, which is being held this week at the Sevierville Golf Club - River Course.

Lincoln Memorial freshman Connor Froning tied a SAC championship record with his eight-under par 64 and is the first round leader. The 64 also broke the 18-hole record at the River Course.

As at a team, LMU shot a one-under par 287 to lead by 14 shots over second-place (301) and 20 stroke ahead of the Pioneers. Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman University are tied for fourth place at 309. Brevard is sixth with 311, followed by Newberry (314), Catawba (316), Anderson (320) and Mars Hill (329).

Froning matches the first round 64 posted by Presbyterian's Gavin Gillespie at the 2003 championship. He enjoys a seven-shot lead over LMU teammate Jamie Chapman and Carson-Newman's Jonathan Kim-Moss who are tied for second with 71.

Leading the charge for Tusculum is senior Derek Cantrell, who tallied a 75 and is tied for 10th place. Senior Nick Cantrell is 13th with 76, while sophomore Warren Cheney is tied for 16th with 77. Junior Dakota Norton is tied for 25th place with 79, while 2013 All-SAC honoree Nick Forsberg is 28th with an 80.

The second round of the Food Lion SAC Men's Golf Championship will be start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
