KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- The Tusculum College men's golf team posted an opening round 301 while sophomore Warren Cheney established a nine-hole school record following day one action of the ninth annual Kiawah Island Invitational. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at the 6,875-yard, par-72 Cougar Point Golf Course.

The Pioneers are tied for 11th place in the 19-team field. No. 12 North Alabama has the opening round lead with an eight-under 280, led by individual leader Ricky Stimets, who shot a 66. Host USC Aiken is second with 281, while Erskine is third with 283 and Coker is fourth at 287. Georgia College, St. Thomas Aquinas and Newberry are in a three-way tie for fifth with 291. Georgia Southwestern is eighth with 295, while North Georgia (298) and Armstrong (299) rounded out the top 10.

Tusculum and Belmont Abbey are tied for 11th with 301, followed by Carson-Newman (304), Lenoir-Rhyne (305), Limestone (306), Barton (306), Brevard (310), Mount Olive (315) and Fairmont State (319).

Freshman Nick Forsberg is the top Pioneer as he carded a 74 and is tied for 34th place. Cheney accounted for the most interesting round of the day as he opened with a 45 on his outward nine and followed with a school-record 30 on his final nine holes to shoot 75 and is tied for 41st place.

Seniors Nick York (75 - T41st), Derek Cantrell (77 - T56th) and David Talley (83 - T84th) wrapped up the scoring for Tusculum.

The final round will be played on Tuesday.
