Tusculum trio advances in Tennessee State Amateur Championship

CORDOVA, Tenn. --- Three members of the Tusculum College men's golf team have advanced to the final two rounds of the 96th annual Tennessee State Amateur Championship. The four-day, 72-hole tournament is being held this week at the Colonial Country Club South Course.

The Tusculum junior trio of Derek Cantrell, Nick York and David Talley all survived the cut on Wednesday and move onto Thursday's third round.

Cantrell, a native of Knoxville, Tenn. (Halls HS), posted his second straight round of 77 and is tied for 40th place with 77-77=154 (+10). Cantrell's round was a roller-coaster ride that included a quintuple bogey nine on the par-four 17th hole, but responded with birdie on the 18th hole, his fifth of the round.

York, a Kingsport, Tenn. product, shot 77 on Wednesday and is tied for 44th place with 78-77=155 (+11). The Sullivan South High School graduate bogeyed four straight holes on his outward nine, but tallied three birdies as well for a 37 at the turn.

Talley (Bristol, Va./Virginia HS) carded 77-79=156 (+12), which was on the cutline and one of 64 golfers to advance in the championship.

Tusculum incoming freshman Warren Cheney (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan HS) missed the cut by one shot as he went 75-82=157 (+13).
