Pioneers shoot 291 to take first round lead at Tusculum Invitational

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Host Tusculum College fired an opening round 291 and leads by two shots after the first day of the 18th annual Tusculum Men's Golf Invitational, held this weekend at Link Hills Country Club.

But five teams are within five shots of the Pioneers, including second place Findlay, who posted a team score of 293. Catawba is third with 294, while Grand Valley State shot 295 and is in fourth place. Tennessee Wesleyan and Lincoln Memorial are tied for fifth place with 296.

USC Lancaster freshman Josh Hinson has the first round lead in the medalist competition as he fired a two-under par 69, one shot ahead of three players at 70, including Tusculum's Lawson George, LMU's Jamie Chapman and Casey Flenniken of Tennessee Wesleyan. Three players are tied for fifth place including Joe McGeean (Findlay), Nick Gunthorpe (Grand Valley State) and Rafael Jackson (Walters State). Tusculum sophomore Nick York and junior Matt Poff (playing as an individual competitor) are tied for eighth place with King College's Richard Powell at 72.

USC Lancaster posted a 301 and is seventh, while Anderson is eighth with 304 and Tri-County is ninth with 305. The trio of Walters State, Limestone and Montevallo are tied for 10th place with 306, followed by Spartanburg Methodist (310), Tiffin (311), Wingate B (313), King (315), Virginia Intermont (316), Mars Hill (324), Brevard (327) and Parkland (333).

Tusculum senior Luke Fullen is tied for 11th place after shooting a 73 on Saturday. TC's David Talley is tied for 37th place with 76, while Derek Cantrell carded a 79 and is tied for 63rd place. Playing as individual competitors along with Poff are Tusculum teammates Justin Harvey (74) and Dakota Norton (77), who are 21st and 48th respectively in the medalist standings.

The final round will tee off just before 8 a.m. Sunday morning at the par 71, 6,763-yard layout. The 20-team, 108-player tournament field is the largest in the 18-year history of the event.
