Tusculum's Nick York wins East Tennessee Amateur

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. --- Tusculum College's Nick York posted a tournament record 62 in the second round en route to winning the 2010 East Tennessee Amateur Golf Tournament last weekend at the Elizabethton Golf Course.

York, a rising sophomore at Tusculum, carded a 12-under par score of 204 for the three-round tournament, winning by three shots over runner-up Brad Robinson, who won this event in 2008.

The Kingsport, Tenn. native (Sullivan South HS) posted a two-under par 70 in the opening round and followed with career and tournament best 62 in Saturday's second round to take a four-shot lead over Robinson entering Sunday's final round.

Tusculum teammate David Talley (Bristol, Va./Virginia HS) finished third for the tournament title with 211 (-5), including Sunday's 73. Tusculum alum Sasha Catron (Greeneville, Tenn.) was one of 10 players in the tournament field to finish under par as he tied for seventh place with 215 (-1).

In his rookie campaign at Tusculum, York qualified to play in all nine events as a freshman, while posting a 75.78 stroke average, which was third on the team. He recorded three top 20 finishes, including a pair of two top 10 showings. York's sixth place finish at the 2010 South Atlantic Conference Championship earned him a spot on the SAC All-Tournament Team.

Talley finished second on the Tusculum team with a 75.77 scoring average in a freshman season that was hampered with injury. Talley captured medalist honors twice, winning at the Tusculum Fall Classic and the Lincoln Memorial University Fall Invitational.

Catron, a 2006 Tusculum graduate, played his collegiate golf from 2002-06 and currently has the seventh-lowest career stroke average in school history at 76.06. He garnered All-South Atlantic Conference accolades three times, including 2004 as he qualified to play as an individual competitor at the NCAA Division II Super Regional in Greensboro, Ga.
