MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --- Tusculum College senior
Chase Carroll shaved six shots off his opening
round score to card a one-under par 71 in the second round of the
NCAA Division II Men's Golf Southeast/South Super Regional, Tuesday
at the Robert Trent Jones Trail. Carroll is currently tied for 35th
place with his 77-71=148 (+4).
It was a rollercoaster ride for the Knoxville, Tenn. product on
Tuesday as he posted four birdies and three bogeys for his round.
Starting on the 10th hole, Carroll pared his first three holes,
including a tricky five-foot putt on his first hole of the
morning.
The 2009 South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year scored his
first birdie of the championship when he stuck his tee shot
six-feet from the hole on the par three 13th. He followed that with
another birdie on the 15th hole to move to two-under on the
day.
But that's when the up and down round would begin as he sandwiched
a birdie on No. 17 with bogeys on the 16th and 18th to finish his
outward nine with a one-under 35.
The three-time All-SAC standout answered with four straight pars
and got back to two-under par with birdie two on the par 3 fifth
hole. But Carroll stumbled on the next hole with a bogey on No. 6
and closed out his round with three straight pars.
He is still 10 shots behind tournament leader Chris Goldan of Lynn
University, who followed Monday's 67 with a 71 for his 137.
Carroll's 71 is his 11th sub-par round of the year, which is a new
school single-season record. He was also one of only 14 players in
the tournament field to post red numbers on Tuesday.
The third and final round of this year's championship will be
played on Wednesday on the par 72, 7,126-yard layout.
