MOORESVILLE, N.C. --- Tusculum College's
Chase Carroll and Chris Wynne
posted a pair of top 10 finishes at the 2008 NCAA Division II
Southeast Region Men's Golf Championship, held this week at the
Point Lake Golf Club. Playing as individual competitors, Carroll
posted a three-day total of 219 to tie for sixth place, while Wynne
shot 221 to tie for 10th for the best two performances ever carded
by a Pioneer golfer at a NCAA Championship event.
Carroll, a junior from Knoxville, Tenn. (Bearden HS), shot a final
round 71 (-1), one of only six golfers to shoot under par on
Wednesday. Starting on the back nine, Carroll dropped a shot on the
11th hole, but rebounded with birdies on 12, 15 and 16 to post a 34
on his outward nine. One of the highlights of the round was his
30-foot birdie on No. 16.
The two-time All-South Atlantic Conference honoree birdied No. 1
to go to three-under for the day and got within striking distance
of the leaders as he climbed into the top five. But a missed
four-footer for birdie on No. 2 and bogey on the third hole stopped
the momentum. Carroll answered with four straight pars, until the
eighth hole when he three-putted the par five for a bogey as he
shot 71 to wrap up his second NCAA Regional appearance.
Wynne, a senior from Johnson City, Tenn. (Science Hill HS), struck
the ball well in his opening nine holes as he fired a 34 with seven
pars and birdies on No. 12 and 18 to get to cut his tournament
score to one-over and was in sight of the leaders. But four bogeys
on the inward nine cut his final day charge short as he shot 74 in
his final collegiate outing.
Wynne, the 2008 SAC Player of the Year, wrapped up the best season
in school history and one of the best collegiate careers ever by a
Pioneer. The three-time NCAA Regional qualifier posted a 72.82
scoring average, breaking the previous mark established by 2003 SAC
Player of the Year Brent Dyson (74.07, 2002-03).
Wynne's 75.39 career scoring average is currently the third lowest
in Tusculum history.
Carroll's 73.05 scoring average this year is second only to Wynne,
but his career 75.21 average is presently the best in school
history, just ahead of former All-American Todd
Ricker (1992-96, 75.27).
Niclas Johansson of Georgia College & State
University won medalist honors with his 212 (-4), while leading the
Bobcats to the team title as well. Carson-Newman's Brad
Johnson finished second with 213 (-3) and will advance to
the NCAA National Championship as an individual competitor.
