No. 6 Furman downs Tusculum in men's basketball exhibition

GREENVILLE, S.C. --- Furman University's Clay Mounce posted a game-high 23 points to lead the Paladins to a 95-62 win over visiting Tusculum University Wednesday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

For Furman (1-0), it was its season-opener, while NCAA Division II Tusculum played the contest as an exhibition game.

Mounce paced four Furman players in double figures shooting 7-of-11 from the floor with two 3-pointers and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. He also hauled in 10 rebounds for the Paladins, who are ranked sixth in the nation in the CollegeInsider.com Preseason Mid-Major Top-25.

The Pioneers used Wednesday's exhibition outing as a great opportunity for Tusculum's newcomers and young players to get some minutes against quality mid-major program like Furman.

Freshman Ray Tyler led the Pioneers with his 13 points in his 25 minutes of action. Tyler shot 4-of-10 from the floor including 2-of-4 from three-point land and 3-of-4 from the free throw line.  Rookie Yan Kankela played well in his 24 minutes on the floor as he tallied 10 points and hauled in a team-best seven rebounds.

Sixteen players recorded minutes for the Pioneers on Wednesday with 12 of them finding their way into the scoring column. Avishai Lowery accounted for nine points as the sophomore didn't miss a shot on the day going 2-of-2 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.  Miguel Boskovic and Adrian Cohen scored six points apiece, while Brandon Mitchell and Inady Legiste tallied four points each.

Furman finished the game shooting 53 percent from the floor and 19-of-24 at the free throw line (79%). Tusculum shot at a 40 percent clip and were out-rebounded by a 46-30 margin.

The Pioneers, who defeated UVA Wise 109-96 late Tuesday night saw its regular starting five play a grand total of 25 minutes and scored eight points.

Tusculum (2-0, 2-0 SAC) returns to South Atlantic Conference play this Saturday when they travel to second-ranked Lincoln Memorial University (2-0, 2-0 SAC) for a 4 p.m. contest at Tex Turner Arena.
