Carter scores 1000th point in loss to Carson-Newman

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Carson-Newman University's Charles Clark scored 25 points in leading the Eagles to an 86-65 South Atlantic Conference win over Tusculum College Wednesday night in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action at Pioneer Arena.

The loss spoiled the milestone night by Tusculum senior Darius Carter who recorded his 1,000th career point in a Pioneer uniform. He set the mark with a pair of free throws at the 3:52 mark of the opening half coming out of a media timeout. Carter finished the game with a team-high 24 points and becomes the 23rd player in school history to join the exclusive 1,000-Point Club.

Carson-Newman (7-6, 3-4 SAC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and didn't look back. The Eagles connected on 20 of their 28 first half shots to shoot 71.4 percent to lead 48-25 at the intermission. As hot as C-N was from the field, the Pioneers (6-5, 2-4 SAC) shot 26.5 percent from the floor in Tusculum's first game in 20 days.

C-N's Zack Pangallo scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, while Carson Brooks finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Carter finished the night with 6 rebounds, four assists, three steals and shot 9-of-12 from the free throw line.

For Clark, he went 9-of-14 from the floor and a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe. The Eagles finished the game shooting 88.2 percent from the foul line going 15-of-17.

For Tusculum, Chase Mounce accounted for 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while Matt Shown tallied 10 points, all coming in the second half, while also grabbing six boards. Kendall Patterson added eight points and three assists, while Zach Davis contributed four markers and five rebounds for the Pioneers.

Carson-Newman shot 56.9 percent from the field on the evening and edged the Pioneers on the boards by a 38-37 margin. C-N outscored the Pioneers 44-32 in the pain and held a 26-11 advantage in bench points.

Carter's 1,015 career points are currently 20th on Tusculum's all-time scoring list.

Tusculum returns to action on Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers host Newberry College (9-4, 4-3 SAC) for a 4 p.m. SAC contest. The Wolves are coming off Wednesday' 133-122 overtime win over Lenoir-Rhyne.
