Catawba shooting too much in 106-87 win over Tusculum
Box score GREENEVILLE, Tenn. ---

Elon Edwards scored a game-high 35 points and Catawba College went 11-for-16 from three-point range as a team in a 106-87 victory over Tusculum College Saturday afternoon in a South Atlantic Conference men's basketball game at Pioneer Arena.

Tyrece Little added 23 points and Reggie Perkins had 15 for the Indians (6-14, 6-10 SAC), who snapped a four-game losing streak by shooting 57.8 percent from the field as a team. Edwards was 14-for-18 from the floor and 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and also dished out a game-high seven assists in the victory.

Jalen Walker led the Pioneers (3-19, 2-14 SAC) with 22 points and Addison Flynn chipped in with 18 points as Tusculum cut a 22-point second-half deficit to seven before the Indians used a 25-7 run to regain control. The Pioneers shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the floor as a team and were outrebounded by the Indians by a 42-29 margin.

Edwards picked up his fourth foul with 6:53 left and Catawba holding on to an 82-74 lead, but stayed in the game and scored 14 points in the next six minutes, including three three-pointers in a little under two minutes as part of a 22-5 run by the Indians.

Catawba shot 57 percent from the field and went 6-for-8 from three-point range en route to building a 57-41 halftime lead. The Indians raced out to a 16-4 lead after four minutes and took a 28-13 lead on a layup by Julian Sampah with 12:41 left in the half. An Edwards steal and layup gave Catawba a 40-19 lead with 5:44 to go, and Andrew Ingram canned a three-pointer with 2:12 on the clock to give the Indians their largest lead to that point at 54-32.

Edwards paced all players with 19 points in the first half, while Walker was 3-for-4 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the line for 16 points for the Pioneers. Matt Shown had a game-high six rebounds for Tusculum in the first half, but Catawba finished the half with a 25-14 edge on the glass.

Catawba's transition game took over at the start of the second half, as the Indians had four fast-break dunks in a span of five possessions to build a 73-51 lead with 14:31 to play. Tusculum trailed 74-55 with 12:32 left, but the Pioneers went on a 12-2 run as the Indians missed four out of five shots and turned the ball over three times during the surge. The run was capped by a Neal Spinks layup with 9:27 left that brought the Pioneers within 76-67, but a three-point play from Little temporary halted the momentum and restored a 12-point lead for the Indians.

A tip-in by Chase Mounce and a jump-hook from Spinks pulled the Pioneers within 79-72 with 7:37 left, but Perkins hit a second-chance three-pointer to extend the Catawba lead back to 10. Spinks hit a bucket with 5:41 left to make it an 85-76 game, but from there it was all Catawba as Tusculum went 1-for-8 from the field and the Indians made six straight buckets over the next five minutes.

Spinks finished with 10 points and four rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for the Pioneers, who received 12 points and six rebounds in 21 minutes from BJ Fisher. Mason Fox had a strong showing off the bench, sparking the Pioneers' second-half run with seven points, five assists and four steals over the final 13 minutes.

Ingram was the fourth player to reach double figures for the Indians, scoring 12 points and grabbing four rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Tusculum's bench combined to score 49 of its 87 points in the game, while the Catawba bench posted 20 points as a unit.

Both teams prospered at the foul line in the game, as Tusculum went 28-for-37 (75.7 percent) and Catawba shot 21-for-27 (77.8 percent) as a team. Little was 9-for-11 from the line to lead the Indians while Flynn joined Walker in perfection by nailing all six of his attempts for the Pioneers.

Tusculum will be on the road Wednesday night against seventh-ranked Lincoln Memorial University at Tex Turner Arena in Harrogate, Tenn. The SAC-leading Railsplitters beat the Pioneers 97-68 in Greeneville on Jan. 15 in the first meeting of the year between the teams. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
