Carter scores 20, Pioneers fall 80-73 at home to Anderson

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Chandler Hash poured in 28 points, including 21 in the second half to rally Anderson University to an 80-73 South Atlantic Conference win at Tusculum College Wednesday night.

Hash connected on four 3-pointers and shot 10-of-10 from the free throw line in the second half as the Trojans (16-5, 11-4 SAC) record their seventh straight win and seventh consecutive road victory. It was also AU's seventh win over the Pioneers (3-18, 2-13 SAC).

Myson Jones tallied 20 points for the visitors as he went 6-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the three-point territory.

Tusculum's Darius Carter scored a team-high 20 points, while going 8-for-9 from the free throw line, while Addison Flynn posted 17 points, including four 3-pointers and dished out a game-high five assists. Keith Jumper recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the year.

The Pioneers jumped out of the gate scoring the first eight points of the game and connected on nine of their first 10 field goal attempts to take 21-13 lead at the 13:04 mark of the first half. Flynn went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and Jumper went coast-to-coast to convert a three-point play.

Tusculum increased its lead to 27-16 following a tip-in by Matt Shown. Anderson responded with eight straight points, including five from Daniel Myles and a Steven Faust layup to trim the deficit to 27-24 with 8:55 left in the period.

Jalen Walker buried a long three-pointer and Carter connected on a pair of free throws to increase the TC lead back to six (32-26) with seven minutes to go before halftime.

Back-to-back three-pointers by Nick Jackson tied the game at 32-32, but back came the Pioneers with eight unanswered including a three-point play by Rory McClure, a Carter layup and another Walker trey as Tusculum led 40-32 with 1:53 left on the clock.

Anderson closed out the period with a 5-2 run, including Jones' third trifecta of the game as the Trojans trailed 42-37 at the intermission.

Tusculum pushed the game back out to an eight-point lead at 49-41 with 17:01 remaining after a Jumper layup.

Anderson answered with 10 unanswered points including a Hash three-pointer at the 13:32 mark to give AU its first lead of the night at 51-49.

The lead would bounce back and forth as TC pushed out to a 59-54 lead with 7:27 left, but Hash followed with back-to-back three-pointers as the Trojans led 60-59 with 6:48 remaining.

Carter gave TC the lead back with a pair of free throws, but Jackson followed with a good bucket on the AU's ensuing possession at 62-61. TC scored five consecutive points, including a base-line jumper by Flynn as Tusculum lead 66-62 with 4:12 to go.

DJ McGowan made one of two free throws, but on his second miss, Jones came up with the AU rebound and he would score a three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66 with 3:18 remaining.

Mounce connected on a TC jumper to give Tusculum the lead again at 68-66 with three minutes left, but Jones buried a huge three-pointer 15 second later as AU led 69-68.

Jones answered on the other side of the floor, coming up with a steal. AU's Kyle Sledge missed a layup, but DJ McGowan scored the tip-in with 2:15 on the clock to give Anderson a 71-68 lead.

Carter tied the game on TC's next trip up the floor converting a three-point play to tie the game for an eighth time at 71-71 with 1:41 remaining.

Anderson would follow with nine straight points as the Pioneers missed on its next four field goal attempts and the Trojans would close out the game making seven of its final eight free throw tries, including four by Hash to seal the win for the visitors.

Tusculum shot 47.5 percent from the floor, compared to Anderson's 42 percent. AU blistered the next from three-point land, shooting 52.2 percent going 12-for-23. TC shot 40 percent from three-point territory, but missed all six of their long-range attempts in the second half.

AU out-rebounded Tusculum by a 38-32 margin, including 11-5 on the offensive boards, resulting into 12 second-chance points. Anderson shot 74.1 percent from the free throw line going 20-of-27, while Tusculum went 11-of-12 from the foul line (91.7%).

McGowan finished with eight points and a team-best eight rebounds for the Trojans.

Mounce contributed six points and five rebounds, while McClure finished with seven points and three assists in the loss.

TC will close out its three-game home-stand when the Pioneers host Catawba College for a 4 p.m. SAC contest at Pioneer Arena. Catawba defeated Tusculum 93-89 in overtime in Salisbury, N.C. when the two teams last met in December.
