Barton College placed five players in double figures and
overcame poor foul shooting to defeat Tusculum College 84-78 on the
second day of the Carson-Newman Classic at Holt Fieldhouse Saturday
afternoon.
Chris Flemmings had 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while
Daniel McClendon and Khari Faison scored 13 points apiece off the
bench for the Bulldogs (2-2), who received 46 of their 84 points
from substitutes. Kendall Patterson and Travis McEachern added 11
points each for Barton, which shot just 46.9 percent (15-for-32)
from the foul line in the game but took advantage of 24 Tusculum
turnovers in the victory.
Jalen Walker led the Pioneers (1-3) with a game-high 17 points and
Neal Spinks added 14 points and seven rebounds as Tusculum shot
48.2 percent from the field overall as a team and placed four
players in double figures one day after piling up 110 points in a
win over Trevecca Nazarene.
Barton led 45-42 at halftime, but opened the second half with a
13-2 run to build a 58-44 lead with 16:04 remaining. The Bulldogs
led by as many as 15 points in the second half before the Pioneers
rallied back to within three at 76-73 with 3:37 left. However, the
Bulldogs were able to produce a four-point possession with on their
next trip with just over three minutes to go. With 3:12 left,
McClendon made the first of two free throws and missed the second,
but grabbed his own rebound and was fouled again. McClendon again
made the first and missed the second, but put back his miss to give
Barton an 80-73 lead with 2:57 left.
Tusculum got out of the gates early as they opened the contest with
a 10-2 run, including three-pointers from Darius Carter and Addison
Flynn. Barton responded with nine straight points on three-pointers
by Patterson, Flemmings and McEachern to go on top 11-10 with 14:11
left in the first half. In all, the teams were tied eight times and
swapped the lead nine times in the half, which ended with the
Bulldogs holding a 45-42 lead.
Flynn led all players with nine points in the first half while
Walker and Carter had eight apiece for the Pioneers, who shot 53.6
percent (15-for-28) from the field including 4-for-5 from
three-point range. Faison had a team-high eight points in the half
for the Bulldogs while Flemmings and McEachern added seven
each.
Flynn finished the game with 13 points and five assists in 32
minutes for the Pioneers, while Carter also reached double figures
with 10 points to go along with four rebounds. Matt Shown added
seven points and six rebounds and Zach Davis contributed seven
points and three boards in 16 minutes off the bench for
Tusculum.
Both teams finished with 38 rebounds in the game, but 19 of
Barton's 38 boards came on the offensive end which they turned into
18 points. Each team was also whistled for 25 fouls, with the
Pioneers going a solid 18-for-24 at the stripe as a team.
Tusculum will return to Holt Fieldhouse Wednesday night to battle
their local rivals as they play nationally-ranked Carson-Newman in
their league opener. Game time is scheduled for 8 p.m.
