Host Carson-Newman shot 51.7 percent from the field in a 73-43
victory over Tusculum College Wednesday night in South Atlantic
Conference men's basketball action at Holt Fieldhouse.
Ishmael Sanders connected on four three-pointers and scored a
game-high 18 points for the Eagles (15-4, 8-3 SAC), who turned 21
Pioneer turnovers into 31 points en route to their fourth straight
victory.
Addison Flynn was the lone player to reach double figures for the
Pioneers (5-14, 3-8 SAC), scoring 11 points. JD Miller added eight
points and a game-high seven rebounds as Tusculum shot 31.1 percent
(14-for-45) from the field as a team.
Jared Johnson finished with 14 points and four assists and Antoine
Davis contributed 11 points for the Eagles, who led 32-15 at
halftime. Carson Brooks had three first-half dunks and finished the
contest with nine points, and Cody Henegar added eight points and
five rebounds in the victory.
Sanders shared the team lead in rebounds with five and assists with
four while coming up with four steals in 36 minutes of action. He
went 7-for-13 from the field and scored 12 of his 18 points in the
second half.
Tusculum took its only lead of the game at 2-0 on a layup by Nick
Spinks in the opening minute, and Carson-Newman responded with a
13-2 run over the next six minutes to take a nine-point lead.
The Eagles' lead ballooned to as many as 20 points at 30-10
following a dunk by Brooks with 2:53 left in the half.
Carson-Newman led 32-15 at the break behind eight points from
Brooks and six each by Sanders and Johnson.
Tusculum shot just 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from the floor in the
first half, with Miller the only Pioneer to make more than one
field goal as he led the way with four points and four
rebounds.
A three-pointer by Flynn and a free throw by Keith Jumper brought
the Pioneers within 32-19 early in the second half, but the Eagles
pushed their advantage to 26 points at 51-25 following a
three-pointer by Sanders with 13:10 left.
off the bench, Darius Carter, Neal Spinks and Matt Shown all scored
six points apiece for the Pioneers. Shown, who was 4-for-4 at the
foul line, also recorded five rebounds in 18 minutes of playing
time.
Tusculum will be back home on Saturday to battle Wingate in a SAC
matchup beginning at 4 p.m. at Pioneer Arena. The Bulldogs are tied
for first place in the SAC at 9-2 with Lincoln Memorial and
Anderson.
