Moore ranked third nationally in NCAA scoring

INDIANAPOLIS --- Tusculum College guard Kyle Moore is the third-ranked scorer in the nation according to this week's NCAA Division II Men's Basketball statistics, announced officials Monday.

Moore is listed in four statistical categories, while sophomore guard Justin Steigerwald is mentioned twice in this week's report.

Moore, a 6-3, 190-pound senior from Gainesville, Fla., is averaging 24.7 points per game, which is tops in the South Atlantic Conference and the NCAA II Southeast Region. Moore's scoring average is also the fifth-best for all NCAA divisions.

He averaged 36.5 points per game in leading Tusculum to a pair of league wins over Wingate and Carson-Newman last week. For his efforts, he was named SAC Player of the Week for a third time this season and eighth times in his career.

Moore is also third nationally in three-point field goals made per game, averaging 3.8 treys per contest. His 90 three-point field goals this year are the second-most in SAC history and fourth in school history. In 2008-09, Moore connected on a league record 101 trifectas, which were one shy of the school mark set by Shane Banks (102 in 1997-98). In just 83 games at Tusculum, Moore has 279 three-pointers, which are a league-record and second most in school history.

Moore is 16th in the country in three-point field goal percentage (.448) and 46th in free throw percentage (.854).

Steigerwald, a 6-3, 190-pound native of Cincinnati, Ohio, continues to lead the league in assists, averaging 4.9 helpers per contest. The Oak Hill High School graduate also leads the conference in assist/turnover ratio, posting a 2.41 rating, which is 25th in the land.

The Pioneers (14-10, 8-5 SAC) are ranked in five team statistical categories, including 15th in scoring defense (61.4 ppg), 49th in field goal percentage defense (.411), 12th in three-point field goal percentage (.413), 23rd in three-point field goal percentage defense (.299) and 28th in free throw percentage (.740).

Tusculum is in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings and is only a half game out of first place. The Pioneers will host Newberry College on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. for a SAC contest at Pioneer Arena. Tusculum has won six of its last eight games.
