Six Pioneers named to Don Hansen All-Super Region 2 Team

BROOKFIELD, Ill. --- Six Tusculum College student-athletes have been named to the 2015 Don Hansen Football Gazette NCAA Division II All-Super Region 2 Team.

Justin Houston and Cameron Thomas earned All-Region first team honors, Ken Funnye and Billy Munker were named to the second team, while Luke Lancaster and Brandyn Bartlett received third team accolades.

Houston, a 5-8, 170-pound senior from Cleveland, Tennessee, earns a spot on the Hansen All-Region team for a second time in his career. Last fall, he was also named to the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association All-Region Team and the USA College Football All-America Team.

Houston led the South Atlantic Conference in receptions for a third consecutive year, averaging 9.6 catches per game, which are ranked third nationally. He finished the year with 106 receptions for 799 yards and tied a school single-season record with nine touchdowns. His 106 catches are the second-most in TC history, four shy of the school record 110 grabs he made in his 2013 campaign.

Houston, a 2013 All-American and three-time All-SAC standout, finished his career with a school and league record 322 receptions, which are the fourth-most in NCAA Division II history. Houston also finished with a school-record 3,182 receiving yards, which are sixth in the SAC record book. He is also the program's all-time leader for kickoff returns (68) and all-purpose yardage (4,622). Houston also recorded 13 games with 100 or more receiving yards, the most in program history.

Thomas, a 6-0, 195-pound junior cornerback from Nicholasville, Kentucky earns his inaugural All-Region honor. Thomas led the South Atlantic Conference with this 15 passes defended (23rd in NCAA II), including a league-best five interceptions (23rd in NCAA II). The 2015 All-SAC second team honoree tallied 52 tackles, including three for loss and forced a fumble.

Thomas opened the season with an interception and three pass break-ups at Virginia-Wise. He followed with eight tackles and an interception against Virginia State and made nine tackles with two behind the line of scrimmage against 23rd-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne. In TC's road game at North Greenville, Thomas returned an interception for a 54-yard touchdown. He later added nine tackles at Limestone and seven more against Catawba.

For his career, Thomas has amassed 23 passes defended, which are sixth in the TC record book. His eight career interceptions are the third-most by a Pioneer.

Funnye, 6-1, 170-pound senior of Georgetown, South Carolina, finished second in the league in receiving yards, averaging 84.4 yards per game (36th in NCAA Division II). The 2015 All-SAC selection finished third in the conference averaging 6.5 receptions per game (21st in NCAA II), while also garnering USA College Football All-America laurels.

Funnye opened the season with a school single-game record 232 yards and two touchdowns at Virginia-Wise. Two weeks later, he posted 182 yards on 13 receptions with a pair of TDs against Lenoir-Rhyne. He answered that performance with 162 yards on just four catches with two TDs at Newberry.

Funnye was also a threat on special teams where he averaged 24.2 yards per kickoff return (2nd in SAC/50th in NCAA II), including a career-best 94-yarder for a touchdown at nationally-ranked Carson-Newman University in the season-finale.

He wraps up his career eighth all-time with 1,978 receiving yards on 180 receptions (6th in TC history). His 23.1 kickoff return averaged is ninth in school history, while his 2,994 career all-purpose yards are ranked ninth in the Tusculum record book.

Munker, a 6-4, 305-pound senior offensive tackle from West Palm Beach, Florida, also earned spots on the All-SAC second team and the USA College Football All-America team. Munker anchored the offensive front which boasted the top passing offense in the league (292 ypg - 20th in NCAA II), while allowing 12 sacks in 478 pass attempts. TC allowed 1.09 sacks per game, which was third in the SAC and 18th fewest in the country.

Lancaster, a 6-4, 185-pound sophomore from Gaffney, South Carolina, led the region in passing yards per game (287.9 ypg - 16th in NCAA II), total offensive yards per game (293.3 ypg - 25th in NCAA II) and completions per game (24.73 cpg - 6th in NCAA II). He also passed for 21 touchdowns, which are fourth in the region and 46th in the nation.

The Gaffney High School graduate passed for 3,167 yards in 2015, which are the sixth most in a Tusculum season. His 272 completions are the sixth-most ever by a Pioneer quarterback, while his 468 pass attempts are fifth in the TC record book. He passed for over 250 yards in seven of his 11 starts this season, including four outings with 350 yards or more. He earned a spot on the D2CCA All-Region team.

Lancaster threw for a career-high 477 yards and four touchdowns in TC's season-opening win at UVa-Wise. His 477-yard performance was the eighth-best in Pioneer history. Two weeks later, he passed for 452 yards and six touchdowns against Lenoir-Rhyne. The 452-yard effort is ninth in school history and his six TDs are one off a TC and SAC single-game record.

Bartlett, a 6-1, 225-pound junior linebacker from Dacula, Georgia, led the Pioneers in tackling this season with 94 stops, while his 8.5 tackles per game average is second in the league. The 2015 All-SAC first team selection also tallied two tackles for loss and a pass break-up. Bartlett also forced a team-high three fumbles, which are second in the SAC and 36th in the country. He posted double-digit tackles on five occasions this year, including a season-high 13 stops against Lenoir-Rhyne. In that game, he forced two fumbles and recovered another. During his 22-game career, he has already amassed 169 career tackles and his five forced fumbles are tied for ninth in program history.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Illinois, started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2015 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in February.
