Montreal Alouttes ink Tusculum's Bo Cordell to contract

MONTREAL --- Tusculum College quarterback Bo Cordell has signed a free agent contract to play professional football with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League announced team officials Friday.

Cordell becomes the third player in program history to sign with a CFL team and the 26th to ink a professional contract.

Cordell played at Tusculum from 2009-2013 where he accounted for the most prolific passing career in NCAA Division II history. The Cincinnati, Ohio native (Indian Hill HS) owns 15 NCAA II records, including career passing yards (16,265 - 4th all NCAA divisions), career completions (1,397 - 3rd all NCAA divisions), career pass attempts (2,187 - 3rd all NCAA divisions) career total offensive yards (16,432 - 4th all NCAA divisions) and total offensive plays in a career (2,572 - 2nd all NCAA divisions).

Cordell was named the 2013 South Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year, becoming the first TC football standout to earn the honor multiple times (2010 & 2013). He is also one of only four players in league history to earn Offensive Player of the Year distinction on more than one occasion, along with: Todd Cunningham (Presbyterian College - 1999, 2000, 2001), Tommy Laurendine (Lenoir-Rhyne University - 1988, 1999) and Jonas Randolph (Mars Hill University - 2009, 2011).

Cordell is also one of only the six Tusculum student-athlete to be named a multiple-time SAC Player of the Year honoree, joining, Lesley Murray (women's tennis - 2001, 2002, 2003 & 2004), Jasmine Gunn (women's basketball - 2009-10 & 2010-11), Kyle Moore (men's basketball - 2009-10 & 2010-11), Simon Holzapfel (men's cross country - 2009 & 2010) and Lukas Winkelmann (men's tennis - 2012-13 & 2013-14).

Cordell, who finished fourth in the national voting for the Harlon Hill Trophy (DII National Player of the Year), was named to the Football Gazette All-America team and garnered third team honors by Beyond Sports Network.

The 2013 Daktronics Region Offensive Player of the Year led the SAC in six statistical categories including: passing yards (3,920 - 4th in NCAA II), passing yards per game (356.4 ypg - 4th in NCAA II), points responsible for (178 - 32nd in NCAA II), points responsible for per game (16.2 ppg - 37th in NCAA II) and total offense (365.1 ypg - 4th in NCAA II).

Cordell's 3,920 passing yards in 2013 are the third-most in school history and fifth-best in SAC history, while his 4,020 total offensive yards are third most in both the TC and SAC record books. Cordell completed 25 touchdown passes in 2013, which are the third most by a Tusculum player and eighth-most by a SAC quarterback.

He owns 13 SAC football records, including career touchdown passes (112) and touchdowns responsible for (127), marks he established in his collegiate finale against Mars Hill.

He has also established 19 school records, including most passing yards in a game with his 596-yard performance against Elizabeth City State this past September. It was one of 16 times in his career that he threw for over 400 yards in a game, including six occasions eclipsing the 500-yard plateau.

During his Tusculum career, Cordell has also been recognized for his success off the gridiron. This past fall, he was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy presented by the National Football Foundation. A total of 170 semifinalists were honored, including 24 football student-athletes from NCAA Division II.

Cordell graduated from Tusculum in 2013 while majoring in business administration with a concentration in management.
Cordell was also named to the prestigious American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team®, where was one of only 22 collegiate football players in the nation (NCAA-BCS, NCAA-FCS, NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA) to be recognized. Cordell has been very active on campus and in the community. He has volunteered with the Tusculum Mentors Program, Earth Day, Tusculum Lunch Buddies program, Boys and Girls Club Youth Football Clinic, Adopt-a-Highway program and served as a representative with the Pioneer Student Athlete Advisory Council. He has also volunteered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Breast Cancer Awareness and volunteered planting a community garden.
